Year 7 English – Australian Poetry Performance

On Monday 4th August, Complete Works Theatre Company visited our school to perform an array of Australian poems to our Year 7 cohort. The students relished the opportunity to appreciate poetry as it was brought to life for them to enjoy!

Here are a few reflections from our Year 7 students on how the performance enriched their understanding of poetry:

I loved the poems they picked. All of them had a deep underlying layer of raw emotion. Hurt, heartbreak, love and sadness – underlying emotions that makes us feel a connection. And that’s what poetry is about, feeling a connection to writing.

This performance really stood out to me because we don’t often hear poetry spoken out loud like this every day. I think that this experience taught my peers and I about how poetry isn’t just an essay; it comes from the heart, and it needs to be spoken.

I enjoyed how their body language and actions create a vivid picture for the audience. I connected to the poetry because of the way the performers expressed the language and how poetic devices were used. Overall, this was a fun way of learning and understanding something new.

I enjoyed the performance as it was very informative yet entertaining. They used a myriad of poetic devices through different poems and explained their use in depth. The performances were visually appealing through the accompaniment of exciting body language. In essence, it was a great show.

I really enjoyed the use of pace, gestures and tone by the presenters to set an overall mood for each poem which made it very clear about the author’s intention and easier to interpret.

I enjoyed the movement and the acting. I enjoyed it because it gave me a different insight to poetry, and it made the topic feel a whole lot less daunting to know that there is no wrong answer to writing poetry. And that we can start poetry by writing about something as simple as an apple. I also learned that it is easier to edit than write better first try. Overall, the performance was a massive learning opportunity, and I would like to watch more of these in the future.

I enjoyed watching all their hard work come into action and their passion to teach others poetry was really inspiring. The performance was a mix of excitement and suspense, and it was really worth the time to watch. The best thing of the show for me was the actions they included as it gave people a reason to be engaged and remain eager to listen.

I enjoyed the performance as it shows stories of people’s lives and memories. Each person shares all the pain or happiness that people go through.
