Y9 - Ski Camp

Year 9 Ski Camp

What an exceptional week it was up at Mt Buller. Upon arrival, the snow gods danced and showered white flakes upon us to set the tone for a picturesque entrance. It was a Christmas in July miracle. It set the tone for the week. Blessed with perfect conditions and an all-access pass to the mountain, this Year 9 group attacked the slopes with great enthusiasm, vigour and a keenness to learn, hone and improve their skiing skills.

With perseverance a plenty, they ploughed and persisted their way up and down Bourke Street, slowly advancing and exploring the north side, then the south side, and by the end of the week, attempting to ski right off the summit.

Venturing outside their comfort zones, but also skiing and snowboarding within themselves, I could not be prouder of this group of students who exceeded every expectation and excelled, not only in their confidence to navigate snow on a pair of skis, but also with their support and collegiality of each other, their connection and belief within themselves, and their positive attitude to immerse themselves in an environment quite new and foreign to most of them.

Perseverance was the key, and persevere they did. Well done Year 9 on a truly fantastic experience.

For my Duke of Ed Adventurous Journey, I completed a 5-day ski camp along with the rest of the grade which was both challenging and incredibly fun. On Day 2, I struggled with not being able to stop quickly enough and kept falling, but I made sure to get back up every time. This helped build my perseverance and reminded me how important it is to stay positive when things don’t go to plan. Day 4 was my biggest test when a couple other people and I got confused after realising we weren't where we thought we were. We used our problem solving skills and managed to eventually find our way back to the run called Abom. In contrast, a success I had would've been going down the harder blue runs called 'standard' and 'Little Buller' even though I was pretty scared. Pushing through and completing the runs helped me gain even more courage and confidence in myself. This journey and experience overall developed my determination as well as my resilience under pressure immensely. Even with the challenges faced I had so much fun and gained a lot of confidence in my ability to ski and create a good time.

Our recent ski camp at Mt Buller was a memorable part of our Duke of Ed experience. The cold weather and full days on the slopes still brought plenty of challenges, from learning to ski or snowboard, to managing fatigue and staying motivated in tough conditions. Each of us had different experiences, but we all had the chance to step outside our comfort zones, develop resilience, and support one another through the ups and downs. Whether it was finally making it down a difficult run or helping a friend get back up after a fall, the camp gave us a real sense of achievement and growth. It was an experience that not only built our confidence but also brought us closer together as a cohort .
