Outdoor Education

SCIENCE WEEK & BOOK WEEK
The last two weeks have been an exciting time in the Outdoor Education space. We’ve had a wonderful time celebrating Science Week and Book Week with hands-on, nature-based learning. For Science Week, students planted seeds and explored the science behind germination and the role greenhouses play in helping plants thrive. John Ellis visited the Year 6 students and our Sustainability Leaders, giving them a refresher course in pruning the Vineyard in winter. There's lots of work to be done!
For Book Week, we delved into the stunning books of Jeannie Baker, especially Window, which sparked deep conversations about development, environmental change, and its impact on nature. To celebrate Book Week, we baked cookies using rhubarb, lemon, and warming spices like ginger and cinnamon, sparking discussions about where these ingredients come from. Students also created beautiful, nature-inspired bookmarks. As always, a highlight has been caring for our animals and learning how to approach them with calmness and care.
Vineyard Volunteers Needed! - 'The Big Prune' Friday 29th August
We’re calling on our wonderful school community to lend a hand in the vineyard before budburst! On Friday 29th August, we’ll be pruning throughout the day with students and would love some extra help from parents, guardians, and grandparents. There are two main sessions: 9am–11am and 1pm–3pm, but feel free to drop by whenever you can. You may be able to stay for 30 minutes or the whole session, we appreciate the help. It’s a great opportunity to get involved, enjoy the fresh air, and support our unique school vineyard. please BYO Secateurs.
Please send an email to Edwina Mintern emintern@hcnewgisborne.catholic.edu.au , or drop by the office to let us know.
All volunteers will need a current WWCC for the time, however it is a quick, free process online and we can guide you through this. https://service.vic.gov.au/services/working-with-children
