School Wide Positive Behaviour Support

Bringing SWPBS to Life Every Day
School Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) isn’t just a poster on the wall; it’s something we make part of our daily routines and integrate into our school culture. It starts with clear expectations: Be Safe, Be Kind, Be a Learner. These are taught in all areas of the school, from classrooms to the playground. Teachers model the behaviours, give reminders, and most importantly, celebrate when students show them.
We use a positive token system to recognise students’ efforts. When a child is spotted doing the right thing, like including a classmate in a game or persisting with a challenging task, they may receive a token. These tokens are our way of saying, “We see you. We appreciate your positive choices.”
Once the class has collected enough tokens, they can celebrate together by redeeming them for a special activity. The list of activities comes from the students themselves, so the reward is something they are excited to work towards as a team.
Our school also uses a tiered support system:
Tier 1: Universal strategies for all students (our expectations, lessons, and positive acknowledgements)
Tier 2: Extra support for students who need a little more guidance
Tier 3: Individualised help for students with more complex needs
This tiered approach ensures that every student receives the level of support they need to succeed, whether through whole-school strategies, targeted assistance, or personalised plans. By embedding SWPBS in every aspect of school life, we are building a consistent, supportive, and positive learning environment that helps all students feel valued and reach their full potential.
As parents and carers, you can support this work at home by asking your child about the SWPBS matrix or whether they earned a positive token at school today. These conversations reinforce our shared values and celebrate the positive choices students make every day.
Many thanks,
The SWPBS Team
