Music Extension Recital 3

On Thursday 7th August the Year 12 Music Extension class presented their final performances and compositions to an awe-inspired audience. This was, without doubt, one of the most incredible concerts I have seen at a school. Our students dazzled with their musicianship and mastery of their instruments in performance. Their compositions were fully realised and performed with confidence by the class and some invited friends. What a fantastic way to mark the end of 6 years in our Accelerated Music Program!

A huge thank you to Ms Dargusch for her work with this class over their time at The Gap SHS. I would also like to thank the student’s instrumental teachers, both private and at school, for helping shape these fine musicians – it has been wonderful to see them grow into confident and creative artists.

Year 12 Drama – Antigone Transformation Performances

On Friday 8th August the Year 12 Drama students took to the auditorium stage to present their final performance assessment. The task was to transform the classic text of Antigone into a contemporary work utilising the conventions of traditional Greek theatre merged with modern theatrical techniques.

The result was five compelling performances of scenes from Antigone dealing with the themes of love, hate, power, corruption and duty. A huge thank you to Ms Smentek for her work with this class this year.

Essentially Ellington Big Band Workshop and Performance

On Monday 18th August our Big Band students participated in JMIs Essentially Ellington Down Under Festival at Marist Brothers Ashgrove. In partnership with Jazz at Lincoln Centre (one of the world’s most famous jazz institutions), JMI run this performance festival every year for high school jazz bands. We were lucky enough to have drummer, Jerome Jennings, adjudicate our performance and then workshop some of our repertoire with the band. It was an incredible way to develop the students understanding of jazz performance and we can’t wait to hear the performance with Jerome’s comments on the live recording of the session. Ms Fawns and Mr Jarrott also participated in teacher workshops with Jerome and trombonist, Vincent Gardner as professional development on how to improve ensemble blending and dynamics, articulation and stylistic approaches. It will be great to see this in action in our ensembles soon!
