Students Ignite Their Curiosity During Science Week

On Thursday, August 14, we proudly celebrated National Science Week with a series of exciting demonstrations and hands-on workshops at lunch time. The activities were designed to spark curiosity, encourage experimentation, and highlight the joy of scientific discovery.

Students enthusiastically took part in making lava lamps and tea bag rockets, learning about chemical reactions and energy transformations in the process. They were captivated by the dramatic effects of liquid nitrogen and dry ice, which brought the principles of states of matter vividly to life. A highlight was the spectacular “gas fire bubbles” demonstration, which left students in awe of the fascinating—and safe—ways science can be brought into action.

The event was not only engaging but also reinforced the importance of creativity, curiosity, and critical thinking in science. Thank you to the Science staff involved who made it possible. We look forward to continuing to foster a passion for STEM across all year levels.

KPMG EXCURSION

Recently, students attended an industry insight session at KPMG Geelong, organised by OurSchool. KPMG is one of the world’s leading professional services firms, provides audit, tax, and advisory services to businesses and organisations globally.

The interactive event gave students the opportunity to explore career pathways at KPMG, take part in small group discussions with employees, and learn how subjects such as VCE Accounting, Economics, and Business Management can open doors to university and future employment.

The importance of attendance

At Western Heights College, we prioritise regular school attendance. Attending school every day means experiencing what counts – the learning, friendship, fun and opportunities that can shape your child’s future.

We understand that there are times when your child will need to miss school but to ensure minimal disruption to their education, please consider scheduling family holidays or medical/dental appointments outside of school time.

If your child is having difficulty attending school, please reach out to their relevant LCL through Compass about getting support.

For more information about the importance of everyday attendance, see the

Attendance and Missing School link.

Remember, Every Day Counts.

Library News and Updates

In Week 5 of Term 3 we celebrated Book Week in our library. The theme Book an Adventure was set by the Children’s Book Council of Australia, and they celebrated their 80-year anniversary of Book Week this year!

We invited our students to embark on fantastical journeys and activities, inspiring them to travel through the worlds that books open.

On Monday we enjoyed music in the library courtyard whilst doing our Book Tasting activity where students were exposed to different genres and authors that they wouldn’t usually borrow or read. Students got to read a sample, record key details, and lastly choose a title they would like to read and borrow from our library

On Tuesday we had our Book DJ set up in the courtyard again to mix some adventurous tunes together.

Thursday we were had the pleasure of hosting Kathryn who is a Children’s Librarian with Geelong Regional Libraries to do a Make Your Own Reading Journal with students and celebrated library monitor students who have helped this year in the library with a Mad Hatter’s tea party.

To top off a fun week we had our year 7 cohort come to school on Friday dressed as their favourite book character with 1st prize going to Byron Parker who scored a Dymocks book voucher.

Thank you to all who came into the library to join in on our activities and book ventures. Special shoutout to the amazing year 12’s who dressed up on the Thursday to celebrate Book Week too!
