Unit of Study: Rights on the Rise

 

Brief Description: Rights on the Rise investigates the progression of rights for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Students will explore the diverse experiences of Indigneous people in the 20th and 21st centuries and evaluate the progress that Australia has made towards reconciliation.

 

Scaffolding Learning

At the conclusion of this unit of study students will have: 

 

An understanding of key knowledge

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples’ experiences and perspectives of colonisation and resistance between 1788 and 1938 (H10K30)

  • the significant events, developments, campaigns and movements for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples’ rights and freedoms (H10K31)

  • the experiences and perspectives of significant individuals and groups that contributed to or denied Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples’ rights and freedoms (H10K32)

  • the effectiveness of methods and tactics used to achieve Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples’ rights and freedoms (H10K33)

  • the rights and freedoms Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples have secured since 1938 (H10K34)

  • different historical interpretations and debates about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples’ rights and freedoms campaigns (H10K35)

Assessment Tasks

Students will be required to complete one of the following assessment tasks:

  • Evaluation of historical significance
  • Primary source analysis
