Unit of Study: Location Lottery

 

Brief Description: Location Lottery will investigate global, national and local differences in wellbeing and the factors that create them using both qualitative and quantitative data on health, education, income and living standards. Through case studies, students evaluate strategies to reduce inequality and propose actions to improve wellbeing, highlighting the importance of sustainability, equity and global responsibility.

At the conclusion of this unit of study students will have: 

 

An understanding of key knowledge

  • ways of measuring human wellbeing in places, and how these can be applied to measure differences between countries (G10K15)

  • reasons for and implications of spatial differences in human wellbeing at a local scale and regional scale in Australia and in a country in Asia (G10K16)

  • reasons for and implications of spatial differences in the wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples at local and regional scales (G10K17)

  • the role and responses of international and national government and non-government organisations in improving human wellbeing at a local or regional scale (G10K18)

  • changing historical perspectives over time in relation to the developments in technology, public health, longevity and standards of living in the 20th century, and concern for the environment and sustainability (H10K36)

  • develop a range of questions for a geographical inquiry related to a phenomenon, issue or challenge (G10S01)

  • collect, process and compare information and data from primary and secondary sources, including fieldwork and secondary research materials, using geospatial technologies and digital tools as appropriate (G10S02)

  • explain and evaluate proposed actions, using geographical knowledge and concepts and appropriate methods, and incorporating and acknowledging research findings (G10S07)

Students will be required to complete one of the following assessment tasks:

  • Case study
  • Fieldwork report
