Secondary 7/8

7/8A

Secondary 7/8A has had a very successful Term 3.

Students began the term with an excursion to the zoo, where we got to see a diverse range of animals. Then the animals visited us with the Reptile Encounter company, where students got to get up close with some animals such as a frog, snake, crocodile and stick insect. Some students were especially brave and held the snake. We ended the term by attending the Bundoora farm where we got to experience the feeding time. These excursions have been a great reinforcer for our discovery unit of How do we classify animals? where students have explored animal movement, features, diet, habitat and coverings through language experiences and literacy activities.

In maths, we have been learning about measurement and place value. We explored measuring through the vocabulary of length (long and short), height (tall and short), mass (heavy and light) and capacity (holds more, hold same, hold less). In place value we practiced identifying which collections were bigger and fewer, rounding and partitioning numbers.

Secondary 7/8A should be very proud of all they have accomplished this term.

7/8B

Term 3 has been such a busy and rewarding one in Secondary 7/8B! Students have worked hard, shown great enthusiasm, and enjoyed plenty of special moments along the way.

In Literacy, we’ve been learning all about animals. Students explored their features, movements, and diets, and then applied this knowledge through creative activities such as making dioramas and bird feeders. These hands-on tasks helped bring their learning to life and gave them a chance to share their knowledge in fun, practical ways.

In Maths, our focus was mainly on Measurement. We covered length, height, mass, volume and capacity, and students enjoyed lots of hands-on opportunities to measure, compare and record.

In Social Competencies, we spent time practising how to redirect conversations respectfully, as well as talking about the importance of kindness and respect during Bullying No Way Week. These sessions helped students reflect on how they can build and maintain positive relationships.

We also enjoyed some great highlights throughout the term. Our excursion to the Melbourne Zoo, PJ Day, and Book Week dress-up day were lots of fun, and the students loved the Spectacular photoshoot, rehearsals, and full runs as excitement builds for the big performance.

7/8C

Term 3 has been a term of consolidation. We have consolidated our friendships within and outside of the class, our respect for each other and our routines. This has resulted in an atmosphere that is structured yet relaxed. In such an environment learning can take place.

This term we have welcomed a new student into the class, learnt about Mass and Number and explored many aspects of the animal kingdom, enjoying a Melbourne Zoo visit, a Reptile Incursion and a trip to Bundoora Farm. This is all great fodder for discussion and writing tasks. The highlight has definitely been the Spectacular, Rock and Roll all Night. I have been immensely proud of the way all of the students of 78C have participated, from those who were a little unsure to the front-row show-offs. They have all practised regularly, showed great patience during full-run rehearsals and enjoyed the glow of performing.

7/8D

Term three has been so fast for us in 78D! This term we have been exploring everything animals, starting off with our excursion to the Melbourne Zoo! Our learning has ranged from types of animals (reptiles, mammals, fish, and birds) to diets (herbivores, carnivores, omnivores, predators, and prey), and we even made dioramas of animal habitats. In week 7 we had an incursion from a reptile encounters group where we even got to touch some snakes and crocodiles!

In Maths, we’ve been learning about measurement in terms of length, mass and capacity. We learned we can compare and order objects from shortest to longest, and measure them with paperclips. We tried to see if we could measure how heavy different objects are in the classroom by weighing them with little teddies to see how many we needed to make the scale balanced. Now we’re working on place value and we’ve made up this game with counters for us to play while we warm up our brains at the beginning of each maths lesson.

I look forward to term four and seeing 78D take on the next chapter!

7/8E

What a fantastic term it’s been! Our learning has centred around measurement in maths, where students explored concepts of length, mass, and capacity. From comparing object sizes to pouring water between containers and "hefting" items to feel their weight, students were actively engaged in hands on learning.

In Literacy, our focus was all about animals including their features, coverings, and movements. Students explored these topics through books, videos and even a fun game of charades where they mimicked animal movements. This supported their understanding of the natural world in an enjoyable and interactive way.

A standout experience this term was our visit to the Melbourne Zoo, where students particularly loved seeing the tigers and tortoises. Back at school, our class showed great enthusiasm during Bullying No Way Week, participating in a thoughtful activity about the impact of unkind words.

The students worked so hard getting ready for our Spectacular performance, Rock & Roll All Night, and I am so proud of the effort students have put into rehearsals and preparation.

Bring on Term 4!

Madeleine.

7/8F

Term 3 has sped past in Secondary 7/8F! We started off with our excursion to the Melbourne Zoo, where we saw so many interesting kinds of animals. This introduced our Discovery unit on How do we classify animals? Each week we have explored different ways to group animals, including by body parts (legs, eyes, fins, tails, claws), body covering (fur, scales, feathers, shell, skin), diet (carnivore, herbivore, omnivore), habitat (ocean, savannah, desert, rainforest, tundra), and formal classification (reptile, amphibian, fish, bird, mammal, insect). We even got to meet some critters up close at our Reptile Encounters incursion!

Kale - I loved going into the lemur enclosure at the Zoo, I went in five times!

In Maths, we’ve investigated ways to measure a variety of objects by length, mass, and capacity. Using hefting and balance scales to estimate and check  was lots of fun, as was using water and different sized containers to measure capacity.

Of course, term 3 is all about Spectacular and we’ve been proud to have so many actors in our class. Our many dance practices paid off and we showed everyone that we love rock n roll!

Jess - I loved getting to do new dances for Spectacular.

7/8G

Secondary 7/8G have had a busy Term 3, with lots of Spectacular rehearsals and performances and heaps of fun Learning Experiences. We have loved learning about animals; their classification, coverings, features, movement, diets and habitats. We especially enjoyed our varied Language Experiences; particularly our excursion to the Zoo and incursion where we got to touch some animals, making bird feeders and working with a partner to create a habitat diorama.

Maths and measurement have been fun with lots of hands-on learning, working on capacity was quite a wet experience!

‘Bullying No Way’ was celebrated by daily lessons on ‘Be Bold. Be Kind. Speak Up.’ and by wearing purple clothes or accessories.

Congratulations to spectacular 7/8G actors and dancers, your performances were amazing.

We wish everyone a happy and safe holiday and looking forward to a great Term 4 together.

7/8H

Secondary 78H have done a wonderful job learning about all different animals this term. We started off with a fun visit to the Melbourne Zoo with some class highlights being looking at the reptiles, lions and the butterfly enclosure. The class has done a great job at learning more in depth about a range of animals and finding out the different features, diets and habitats that exist in the animal kingdom.

Well done on a successful term.
