20th Sunday in Ordinary Time - Year C
The Fire of Faith
In the readings for this Sunday are powerful and challenging. In the First Reading from the prophet Jeremiah, we hear about the immense struggle he faced for speaking God's truth. He was thrown into a muddy cistern, abandoned by those who didn't want to hear his message.
In the Gospel, Jesus speaks of bringing a "fire" to the earth and of being a cause for division.
In today’s busy world, this concept sound intense, but what is the core message for us as a faith family?
The fire Jesus talks about isn't a fire of destruction, but a fire of transformation. It is the fire of the Holy Spirit that purifies us and gives us the courage to live the truth of the Gospel. It’s the same fire that gave Jeremiah the strength to keep speaking, even when it was difficult and unpopular.
The division Jesus mentions isn't about breaking up our families. It's about the divide between a life lived for God and a life lived only for the world. Sometimes, choosing to follow Jesus means making decisions that others may not understand. It means prioritising kindness over popularity, forgiveness over revenge, and generosity over greed.
This week, let’s reflect on what it means to be courageous in our faith.
Discussion Questions
- How do we, as a family, keep the fire of faith burning brightly?
- How can we support one another in being a little more like Jeremiah, and a little more like Jesus—ready to stand up for what is right, even when it’s hard?
- What does it mean to you to have courage?
- Can you think of a time when you had to be brave, even if it was just for a little while?
- Jeremiah faced a lot of opposition for telling the truth. Can you think of a time when it was hard to do the right thing or to stand up for a belief? What did you do?
- What do you think the "fire" of the Holy Spirit means? What would a person look like who had that fire inside them?
- Jesus says his message can cause division, even in families.
- What is one small way our family can choose to live for God this week, even if it’s a little different from what everyone else is doing?
- What is one thing our family can do to encourage each other to be more courageous in our faith this week?
If you have any further questions regarding your child receiving these Sacraments, please feel free to contact me at the school.

MONDAY ACTION TEAM - MINI VINNIES
Mini Vinnies had a special visit o for their action team time on Monday. Rob, Tayla and Sarah from the Vinnies Youth Engagement Team came and ran a session about homelessness. They ran a number of activities that the Mini Vinnies Action Team were involved in and assisted to develop their understanding of this issue. Mini Vinnies will next Monday decide which of these activities they would like to run on the Soup and Chat Night for the rest of the Mini Vinnies.
MINI VINNIES SOUP & CHAT NIGHT
Not long to go now! The Mini Vinnies Soup & Chat Night will run on Tuesday August 26th from 4.30pm – 7.30pm. Students can go home after school, change into casual clothes and have a snack before returning to begin at 4.30pm
Thank you to the Mini Vinnies that have already handed in their donations for the evening. I am asking Mini Vinnies to ask family and friends for donations. These donations are due by Monday August 27th and I have asked each Mini Vinnie to donate at least $10 but the more we collect, the more we can help. Donations are to be placed in an envelope, clearly labelled Soup & Chat Night with the student’s name and Home Group. These can then be placed in their LS mailbox. On the Soup and Chat Evening, Mini Vinnies will decide what organisation the money raised is donated to, in order to assist those that maybe experiencing homelessness at the moment. Last year it was donated to Ozanam House, the previous year to the Vinnies Soup Vans.
A big thank you to parents who are able to help on the night, setting up, serving and cleaning up and to all the parents who have offered to make soup and donate items. We wouldn’t be able to run this night without your assistance.
A big thank you also to the staff who have already volunteered to stay behind and assist on the evening.
