Wellbeing: Heading into the School Holidays

As we approach the holidays, many children experience a mix of excitement and big emotions. A little structure and connection can go a long way in supporting their wellbeing.

A few simple tips:

• Keep a loose daily routine (especially for sleep)

• Plan one small activity each day—no need to overfill the schedule• Support emotional regulation by naming feelings and offering calm choices

• Make time for connection—simple chats, games, or shared activities

Remember, it’s okay for children to feel bored at times—this often leads to creativity and independence.

If you or your child needs extra support, help is always available –

  •   Parenting Line – still operates, but not Victoria-based
  •  Kids Helpline – 1800 55 1800 (for children/young people, but parents sometimes use it for guidance)
  •  Lifeline – 13 11 14 (24/7 crisis support)
  •  Beyond Blue – 1300 22 4636 (mental health support, including for parents)
  • Maternal and Child Health Line – 13 22 29 (great for ages 0–6)
