Term 4 Learning
Spelling Mastery
We are prioritising our spelling program across the school. Each morning between 9.00am - 9.30am students and teachers will be busy completing their spelling activities. We are asking that our families/friends value this time as much as we do. If you need to speak with your child's teacher, we ask that you make it outside of this time.
Literacy
This term we are exploring imaginative writing and reading for our literacy unit. Students will be looking at a variety of stories as we build our understanding of the features and structures to imaginative texts. This will be supported with an author/book study where students can unpack characters, themes, setting, problems and resolutions in stories.
This week in room 2 we have been using story boards to develop ideas for writing stories. This was fun and students opened up their imagination and illustration skills to draw their own story boards in preparation for their writing.
Some of our room 1 students have been starting their Graduation Presentations and others have been enjoying beginning brainstorming and starting imaginative stories. Next week they will have to write a story with the perspective of them being invisible. I look forward to hearing these pieces of work.
Numeracy
Revision will be a big part of our learning this term. The end of last term students completed some assessment task so teachers could better understand where to progress students in their learning as we approach the end of the year. Students will be investigating shapes, learning about money, and revising the 4 operations. On Wednesday's students will be coming together across the school for a session of problem solving and maths investigations.
This week students have been using manipulatives and board games to practise their counting skills as they make groups, find missing numbers, and revise addition and subtraction strategies. Our senior students have been learning about prime and composite numbers and have been practising those important timetables.
We were challenged with our problem solving this week as we worked with our peers to solve number problems for our Escape Room activities.
Science
Our science unit this term will see us revisit our work of 'Circuits and Switches'. With the help of Miss. B, students will work towards creating their own circuit board to show their understanding of electricity and currents.
Inquiry
Communication is our topic for learning and inquiring. Looking from the past to the present at how people communicate, what tools and devices are/were used, and reflecting on how we communicate is part of our learning this term.
This week students were building their understanding of Morse Code. We had to work in pairs and use blinking as a tool to send a message. We certainly shared a few giggles with each other. To watch someone say, your not listening, and blink harder at them is certainly a sight!
Art
Student voice will drive much of our art lessons this term. We look forward to booking in our excursions and incursions as part of our Gippsland Art Gallery memberships. Art will be shared between Mrs. Anderson and Mrs. Johns this term. This week Mrs. Anderson explored perspective drawing and painting with texture.
