EXTRA READING FOR THE HOLIDAYS

The holidays are coming up which means students may borrow extra books over the break.

Please search for those overdues so your child may borrow and spend some downtime with a great read.

HOLIDAY ACTIVITIES

At the movies

"Runt" by Craig Silvey is a great read and is being enjoyed by many students at school.

It has just been released as a movie and by all reports it is fantastic and a great holiday activity for the whole family.

TOWN LIBRARY / ART GALLERY

Here are some interesting facts students have discovered about our wonderful town library:

It's free. We can borrow up to 20 books at a time. The books are different to those in our school library so we have the best of both worlds. There is a cake tin library. You can loan out movies and music. The online books are great, so you have a choice of SORA from school or Bolinda and Borrowbox from the town library - car trips will never be boring now.

Go to the link to see what's on in the school holidays.

SHADOW JUDGING - iMovie

Student commentary on the Shadow Judging Experience:

Shadow Judging Report - Klara Bunnemeyer, Anastasia Newton, Aggie Daley, Eleanor Pryor, Nimishka Prasad, Kate Wellington and Lucinda Crockett.

What we thought of shadow judging:

As Shadow Judges we chose the Picture Book category of the 2024 CBCA short list books.

We read all six books and decided we would work on “Every Night At Midnight” by Peter Cheong. We also voted for this book to be the winner. We were super excited to find out that our chosen book won the shadow judges award for the category. Shadow judging was a very creative activity and we thoroughly enjoyed it.

We liked it because it is a good way for kids to understand books and the way that they are created and made.

We liked having a voice in the judging process.

Here are some comments:

* it was interesting and engaging it was a pleasure to read

* It was FUN

* fun with a group of friends reading and talking about books

* We worked together on the creative response imovie, and we learned to work as a team.

 * We talked a lot about understanding picture book writing techniques.

Amy our mentor was really great at helping us to understand how pictures and words (text) usually work together to make a great picture book.

We had many meetings with Amy talking about all the books and whether they were great reads or somehow missed the mark in attracting our interest or making sense to us.

Amy also organised a zoom meeting with author Katrina McKelvey.  Katrina spoke to us about picture books and the shadow judging experience.

Here is the link to our creative response.

CHOICE = Motivation

"The strongest positive impact on reading engagement and learning gains come from student self-selection of reading materials. When reading materials are selected for students the links to engagement and learning gain decline significantly."

When students visit the library a huge emphasis is placed on the

LIBRARY BAGS

Please note a LIBRARY BAG is the first item on your child's equipment list for this year.

Thank you for ensuring your child has a library bag. I have some spares and will issue these to students next week who have not yet presented with a bag.

LIBRARY BAGS MATTER...  Not just some of the time but all of the time.

No food or drink on my books.

Food and drink are for the chooks.

Library bags keep ‘em clean.

Books are cool don’t treat ‘em mean.

Bring your bag every time.

Fill it up and get in line.

Have it scanned and scoot on out.

LIBRARY BAGS

We all shout.
