Commedia Journal Article

Our Year 9 Drama students have been diving into the vibrant and hilarious world of Commedia dell’Arte, a traditional Italian theatre style that first emerged in the 16th century. Known for its bold characters, exaggerated movements, and slapstick humour, Commedia has influenced everything from modern sitcoms to clowning and pantomime.

In class, students have explored the stock characters such as Arlecchino, Pantalone, el Capitano and Colombina, learning how each role uses unique physicality, voice, and improvisation to tell stories. They have also experimented with making their own masks, manipulating stagecraft, and the art of physical comedy, in creating their own ‘Confusing Tale of Chaos’ performances.

The unit has encouraged students to take creative risks, work collaboratively and outside their comfort zone, and embrace the joy of performance. Through these practical activities, they are not only developing acting skills but gaining an appreciation for theatre traditions that continue to shape performance today.
