Learning and Teaching

STEM

The Year 1/2s have been learning how to write an ‘algorithm’ (a set of commands) to control a robot. They have been getting the Blu-bot to move around the alphabet to spell out simple words like ‘d, o, g’.  This has been quite challenging, especially working out which way is left and right when the Blue-bot has changed direction.  Our next challenge is to complete a maze.

Science

The Year 5/6 students topic this term is I’M A SURVIVOR its focus is:  ‘The growth and survival of living things are affected by physical conditions of their environment’.  We have been conducting an experiment over the last two weeks to find out, ‘How does the temperature of an environment affect the growth of yeast?’  The student made predictions, identified variables, recorded and analysed the results and evaluated the experiment.  It was interesting to note that even though all three classes used the materials, had the same conditions for the experiment, the results were quite varied but produced the same conclusion.
