Growing our brains with Mrs Dallas, Mrs J, and Mrs Jacobs!

Students in 1/2A have been eagerly awaiting the hatch of the peregrine falcon clutch nestled on the ledge of a multi-storey building in Collins Street, Melbourne. Over the holidays, the three eggs successfully hatched and now we have the pleasure of watching Mum and Dad Falcon take care of some fast-growing eyeases - that's the name of an unfledged falcon chick!
Â
We have learned so many facts about peregrine falcons since we started watching in Term 3. Here are a few interesting ones:
Peregrine falcons are a type of bird called a 'raptor', which means they are a bird of prey and hunt and kill other birds to eat.
Perigrine falcons are the FASTEST animal on Earth and can dive at speeds of over 300km/h!
Peregrine falcons work as a pair when they hunt - Dad usually scatters a flock of birds and then Mum swoops down on a particular bird she has spotted
Peregrine falcon pairs mate for life - how romantic! Dad will bring food to the nest while Mum is incubating the eggs, and then they will swap and Dad will have a turn at incubating the eggs.
Peregrine falcon territory can cover up to 30km square - that means the WHOLE CBD of Melbourne is the territory of the breeding pair on top of the building at 367 Collins Street!
At the end of last term, students in the 1/2 Learning Community culminated their integrated studies learning with a short presentation on a meaningful culture to them. Cultures explored included food, games and entertainment. Some of these presentations can be found below in a compilation video. Please enjoy listening to our students share their cultures and why they are important.
