In the 1/2 learning community, we have been working so hard on consolidating our number knowledge. We have slowed right down to make sure students are getting multiple opportunities to practise their counting, number recognition and ability to partition numbers into their appropriate place value. These are the building blocks of mathematical fluency and the ability to manipulate and compute numbers. It takes time! ⌚
We are very excited to be watching some of the amazing sporting achievements of our Australian athletes at this year's Paris Olympics. In order to help build students' background knowledge about the Olympics, we have been exploring a variety of non-fiction texts to learn about the countries athletes come from, the types of sports represented, the design and order of the medals, and the difference between the Olympics and the Paralympics. This will help students make great connections when we begin our mentor text study using the book 'Koala Lou' by Mem Fox.
How lucky are we at BPS to have a past Olympic Torch runner in our school community?
Last Thursday, the day before the 2024 official Paris Olympic Opening Ceremony, the 1/2 learning community had a guest speaker visit our classroom, Mr Greg Lofts (Nate’s Grandfather). It was 24 years ago when Mr Lofts was invited to participate in the Torch relay leading up to the Sydney Olympics in 2000.
Our students were enthralled listening to Mr Lofts recall having to get up early on the day of the relay, drive to Port Fairy, hold up a substantially heavy torch and run for 750 metres without dropping it.
Mr Lofts was pleased to show off his collection of Olympic memorabilia, and we were thrilled that he was so kind to share his knowledge with us! Thank you, Greg!
