First Nations and The First Fleet
This week, the Year 3/4 students were visited by Barry and Cynda from History Box. They spoke to us about the history of Australia by presenting interesting information about Australian's First Nations People and the First Fleet. A few lucky selected students were given opportunities to dress up in traditional clothing from that era.
Students participated in 4 activities throughout the morning:
1. Students made 'love tokens' from clay. These tokens were made by convicts on death row as mementos to loved ones. They would etch names and pictures into coins using nails.
2. Students blended their own all spice mix. Using a mortar and pestle, they crushed cloves, cinnamon bark and pepper into a powder. All spice was a popular blend in the spice trade.
3. Students moulded their own puppets from clay. Puppets were made by children using clay from the earth. These were used as toys amongst the children.
4. Students played Ngaka Ngaka. Similar to tic-tac-toe, students made stones and aimed to get 3 in a row by moving their stones to adjacent squares. They also played knuckles.
It was a wonderful incursion that linked really well with our Humanities topic this term 'The First Fleet'. We thank Barry and Cynda for sharing their wealth of knowledge and engaging our students in activities.
