Grade 4 Community News

Hello grade 4 students, families and community,

We have had a busy and fun-filled start to Term 3. Grade 4 teachers have been so proud of the amazing habits we have developed that have made it easy for us to have a successful start to the term.

Reading

In reading, students have been consolidating their understanding of world mountains before we move on to our African Kingdoms unit. We had the opportunity to work in teams to research a particular mountain to find its type, elevation, flora and fauna. They were so enthusiastic about this topic, they even decided to create some mountains in the sand pit during their play time! In the coming weeks, the grade 4s will be learning about ancient African Kingdoms. We will explore factors that led to the creation and downfall of particular kingdoms. Remember to ask your students about what they are learning - they are always happy to share the new facts they have learnt!

Writing

We are continuing to explore information reports as a text type. Students have been drafting topic and concluding sentences, before moving on to expand their notes from their reading lessons. Once we put all of these parts together, students will have written paragraphs to add to their information reports about mountains! We have been so impressed with our students’ recollection of text structure and punctuating their writing.

Maths

In maths, students have been applying their understanding of multiplication and division strategies. We have been practising vertical multiplication and short division. It is particularly important for students to understand making groups and sharing numbers before applying this understanding to abstract methods of multiplying and dividing! Remember to encourage your student to practise skip counting patterns, and multiplication tables to assist mathematical fluency.

Swimming

Over the first 4 weeks of term, our grade 4s had the opportunity to learn water safety skills and survival techniques. They were also able to apply this knowledge to their swimming lessons at Bright Waves Swim School. Students learnt when it is safe to swim, how to call for help if they needed it, and some techniques to make sure they are safe in and around water. Students had a fantastic time at their swimming lessons and learnt valuable lifelong skills!

Reminders

  • Students are always able to consolidate their learning by reading at home and filling in their Student Journal to keep track of their nights of reading. Make sure students are bringing these journals to school so their teacher can recognise their achievement!
  • Book Week is coming up in Week 6 (23/8/24). Students are encouraged to come to school dressed as their favourite book character. We look forward to seeing our favourite books come to life.
