Grade 3 Community News
Dear Grade 3 Families,
In weeks 3 and 4, we have started learning about lots of interesting topics which the students have been extremely engaged with throughout the last few weeks.
Reading:
This term, we've continued exploring the rich heritage of the traditional owners of the land, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The students have been deepening their understanding of First Nations culture by combining their knowledge of storytelling, connection to the land, and the intricacies of First Nations languages. Their recent excursion to the Melbourne Museum brought everything together beautifully, and it was wonderful to see them actively sharing their new knowledge while engaging with the exhibits.
Writing:
We have been delving into writing Historical Narratives, and the students have been incredibly creative with their storytelling. We've explored various narratives in class, such as Harry Potter and The Gruffalo, and discussed their features, including structure (beginning, middle, and end), character development (both inside and outside traits), setting, and sensory details. As a result, the students have been skillfully incorporating these elements into their own historical narratives. They are drawing on the historical knowledge they've gained from our Reading to Learn units on Ancient Rome and The First Australians, and their stories are coming to life with imagination and historical depth. We can’t wait to read the finished pieces!
Maths:
Our Grade 3 students are having a great time with our new topic of multiplication. They've been exploring arrays, which are neat grids of objects arranged in rows and columns. This makes it easier for them to see how multiplication works—like figuring out that 3 rows of 4 objects each equals 12. They’re also getting the hang of vertical multiplication, which helps them visualise numbers coming together. It’s fantastic to see them enjoying and getting more confident with these new maths concepts.
Vocabulary:
During our eating time, we are reading the first Harry Potter book.
This is also our topic for vocabulary. Each week we look at 6 words that can be found in our book. Our first week this term, we looked at the meanings for the following words:
Reminders:
- Please remember to send your child to school with a charged iPad.
- Ask your child if they need any new stationery to bring to school (E.G whiteboard markers, greylead pencils and pens.)
- Remember to keep up the nightly reading at home, and bring the student journal to school on their designated day.
Attendance:
It is crucial that all students are attending school every day so they can work on their learning goals and don’t miss important lessons. Please book holidays during school holiday periods rather than during the school term to make sure valuable learning time is not missed.
