Prep

Last week the preps explored the elements of line, shape and colour in their artwork. They learnt about the primary colours (red, blue and yellow), as well as different types of lines. Students practiced drawing a range of lines (including zig-zag, cloud, loop, hills and castle lines), which formed an eye-catching background. In the second part of the lesson, the prep students discussed the different shapes of faces and facial features. Using their new knowledge, they were guided to draw their own self-portrait and colour it in their chosen primary colour. Students later combined their line work and portrait to produce a final piece.

Grade 1 & 2

Grade ones and twos have been learning about warm colours (e.g. red, yellow, orange) and cool colours (e.g. blue, green and purple). Last week, the students observed and discussed the patterns and colours used by Indigenous Australian artist Bronwyn Bancroft. Taking inspiration from her “Boab tree families” artwork, students created their own family tree using either warm or cool coloured paint slicks. They used a layering technique to add patterns, lines and details to their work.

Grade 3 & 4

The grade three and four students have been learning about the element of space, particularly positive and negative space. Last week, they created a background using watercolour paints. They practiced using different brush strokes and blending colours to create effects in the sky. This background will form the negative space in a city-scape artwork they will be working on this week. We can’t wait to see the finished artworks!

Grade 5 & 6

Last week, the grade fives and sixes learnt about the element of space. Using simple one-point perspective, students were able to create the illusion of depth in a landscape drawing. Students created depth and space by drawing a horizon line, a diagonal line, and by scaling details based on whether they were close or far. They used fine liner pen in the drawing stage, and later used watercolour paints to add colour to their landscapes.
