Grade 6 Community News
Courage to Care
The grade 6 cohort were privileged to take part in the “Courage to Care” incursion. This was delivered by a team of trained and experienced volunteers, presenting an “Upstander Program”, designed to promote acceptance of diversity and inspire participants to become Upstanders in their own communities. Students were enthralled as this program featured inspiring testimonies from Holocaust survivors’ family members and stories of survivors of other genocides who were saved by the courage of others. Was an incredible experience the year 6 students will not forget!
Swimming Week 4!
It was 6I, 6F and 6H’s turn to go swimming and what a success! Students loved the experience of going to the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre and learnt valuable lessons around swim safety.
The other year 6 classes were also able to finish the last component of their swim education this week. They completed their water safety assessment, demonstrating their pool skills, even when fully clothed!
In Reading: We have now finished our "World Deserts” unit. Students have grown further in their knowledge of different types of deserts and taken trips around the globe exploring the diverse and intriguing world of deserts and their inhabitants. Students loved exploring the Countries of Africia, Asia and of course Australia and the deserts that live within them. We highly recommend that you encourage your child to explore this further and check out some of the amazing videos National Geographic has to offer.
Coming up in Reading we will be returning to a Reading Reconsidered Unit where we unpack a text as a class, exploring themes, characters and partaking in rich discussions. The book we will be exploring is Boy Overboard by Morris Gleitzman.
In Maths: We have just completed our unit on patterns and algebra. We are seen incredible grown in this unit and students have loved pushing themselves to explore new concepts. Students learnt about algorithms and the importance of following things in the correct sequence.
See if you can get your child to explain the rule for the below pattern and tell you about the next number in the sequence.

Coming up in Maths we will be looking at time. Students will unpack interpreting various schedules and timetables and learn how to calculate elapsed time.
In Writing:
Students spent the last week completing their fact files and brochures. The results were incredibly impressive. Students could choose to create either a fact file or brochure using paper or digitally using Canva. Canva was a big hit, and students learnt many new skills they will be able to transfer to high school. The grade 6’s displayed and presented their finished product to other members in the cohort.
In Vocabulary:
Our Vocabulary Words are taken from our Read 2 Learn lessons to expand the children’s knowledge of World Deserts. Feel free to ask your child how they can use a word in a sentence and give an antonym or synonym for each word.
