Inside the Classroom

Early Primary

Students in Class 5 have been working on becoming more independent by walking to and from the school bus during outings. They enjoyed a trip to Tony Leahey Ford to drop off a recycling bin for our "Earn and Return" initiative.

Class 10 has been thrilled to get back into the swing of things this term. They enjoyed a visit to Art on Anson in the school hall and Anson Street School art exhibition in the Orange City Centre. Students have also enjoyed working on their fine motor and life skills in the Skills House with Miss Edwina. In the classroom, students have been engaged in learning about the Olympics.

Class 11 has settled back into the term, ready to learn. This term, the class has been exploring the Olympics and keeping a close eye on the medal tally. They had the privilege of writing to two Paralympic athletes: Qian Yang, a table tennis player, and Hannah Cowap, a para-rowing coxswain. They are eagerly anticipating how these athletes will perform in the Paralympic Games.

As a class, they have begun creating their own Vegetable Olympics. Each student chooses a vegetable, gives it a name, and provides some information about their athlete. The students will be working on designing their own uniforms, discussing the countries their athletes are from, and inventing their own sporting events to compete in at their Vegetable Olympics. There is excitement about the ideas the students will come up with and the opportunity to compete in their own mini-Olympics.

Class 8 students visit the skills house weekly. The students are focusing on developing their skills in administration tasks and household duties. They are being supported by their class staff and Ms Brennan.

Class 12 were rostered this week to take the Return and Earn bins to Wangarang. Most of the students enjoyed this experience, and were keen to help the staff out.

Stage 4

The students across Stage 4 have engaged in various activities this term. The recycling program for cans and bottles has been a great initiative and students have enjoyed being part of solutions for our planet.

Students used their curiosity skills to investigate a variety of Science concepts. This included sampling different food tastes and an investigation into sound and static electricity which all students thoroughly enjoyed.

A big part of learning has been the use of signing skills using Auslan signing. This allows students to practise and develop a current language which is meaningful for life. Class 14 have spent time in class signing individual alphabet letters to each other.

Class 15 and 16 students have been able to visit their art displays in the Orange City Centre. They are all very proud of their achievements which have been displayed in the community. Please go and visit the display, diagonally across from Big W.

Stage 5

Class 17 has actively engaged in weekly visits to Wangarang as part of their industry experience this term. These visits are an extension of work students have completed during Semester 1 in the Skills House. Students have the opportunity to test their skills in the workplace. Brock said that he is having fun at Wangarang and has enjoyed tying the knots in the rope for the Cowra Abattoirs.

Several students in Classes 18 and 19 have commenced their weekly Work Experience with Transport for NSW. Students have completed the mandatory Safety Induction program and were provide PPE / PPC which they all look fantastic in.

Stage 5 also celebrated the start of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, as a result our students have embraced the Olympic spirit of excellence, respect and friendship wearing green and gold. Classes have included Olympic updates in their morning check in sessions, showcasing sporting achievements of Australians.

During Education Week, several of our Stage 5 students continued with their learning, acquiring valuable information and understanding of road rules in collaboration with Birrang. Many thanks to Mrs. Riley, Mr. Low and the Birrang team in assisting our students. Kiyra indicated she has enjoyed working with Birrang to practice the L’s test, which will assist her in gain her drivers licence at the end of the year, congratulations to one and all.

It was wonderful to greet families and friends who joined us for our Open Classrooms session, as part of Education Week. Art on Anson took centre stage and took our breath away with the sheer creative design of works produced by our students, congratulations to Mrs. Huggett for her dedication and vision in showcasing quality artworks.

Stage 6

Stage 6 technology students designed bunting to help teach younger students at school counting skills. They designed the template, chose the fabric, and colour scheme and then sewed the flags. The year 11 students loved cinpelting the project and the best part was seeing how much the students of class 5 loved the bunting when we gave it to them as a gift. Well done to our talented and kind students.

Students have had a fun and fabulous return to school for Term 3! We have enjoyed wearing green & gold in support of the Olympic athletes, visiting Art on Anson to view all the artworks on display and preparing for Public Education week.

Students have been busy cooking afternoon tea for their special visitors for open classrooms. We hope families enjoyed their visit and seeing where their students learn!

On Thursday our Work and the Community groups visited the Orange City Centre to view our artworks on display. It was great to see our art on display for the community to enjoy. Thank you to the Orange City Centre for inviting us, sharing some yummy treats and supporting our school.

So far this term the Tutorial classes have focused on reconnecting with each other as well as making connections with new students. Malakai joins us from Orange High School and has settled in well to Class 20. We are looking forward to more students joining us throughout the term.

I have been particularly impressed with how well the OLC students have welcomed new and casual staff into their spaces as well as the fantastic job they did at hosting the Education Week family BBQ. We also celebrated Brad's birthday together on this day

In the classrooms there have been quite a few hands-on activities happening in science, and Class 20 has dived right into reading the novel Tomorrow When the War Began, confidently reading aloud to peers. EzyRoller basketball has also been a big hit on sunny days and Brad is enjoying spending time in Class 11 with his peers whilst practising his mathematics skills
