From the Principal

Term 3 has started with a flurry of activities and it is great to see students enjoying these experiences.

On the sporting front students have trialed for Western Tenpin teams with the next round of competition coming up in week 4. Western Region athletics was held in Dubbo with great success and sportsmanship from all involved. Weekly sport has kicked off with Martial Arts and Zumba added to junior sport and Indoor Tennis and Touch for the seniors to try. Many students are trying these for the first time and are enjoying the challenge of learning a new sport. Later in the term we will host the very first interschool sports day - The Diversity Games, inviting Holman Place SSP and Carenne SSP students to our school for some friendly rivalry.

This week we have celebrated Public Education Week with the theme Proud to Belong. All of the staff at Anson Street School are proud to be a part of public education, assisting our students to achieve great things every day.

Last Friday I was honoured to present to our school community the 18th annual Art on Anson exhibition in our school hall. In the thirteen years I have been at Anson Street I have never seen the same artwork repeated and I am always amazed at the talent of our students to produce such creative pieces. They are skillfully assisted by our Art Support Officer Cathy Huggett and every student looks forward to getting messy and immersed in their creations. Sandon Gibbs-O'Neill officially opened the exhibition and was very impressed with the artworks on display.

Over the next few weeks our performing arts students will be competing in the Orange Eisteddfod in dance, percussion (bucket drumming) and choir. Each group has put in many hours of practice and while some are nervous as it is their first time on stage in front of an audience, they are all excited and keen to win! Thank you to all of the staff who support these artistic students and help them to shine. Coming up in week 8 is the Public Schools Orange Performing Arts Showcase where our groups will again perform on stage to a very appreciative audience.

Make sure you add Book Week to your calendar and start to prepare for the book character parade on Friday 23 August. The students enjoy dressing up as their favourite book characters and there will be prizes for each stage. Reading is Magic!

It has been inspiring watching the Olympics and cheering on the Aussies! I can't wait until the Paralympics start on 28 August and we witness the true determination and strength of athletes with disability giving their all in their chosen sport. Oi! Oi! Oi!
