What's Happening In Grade 1

Inquiry

Our students commemorated ANZAC day alongside the rest of the school with a memorial service. The students did a wonderful job creating our class wreaths and their individual poppies, they are to be commended for their efforts.

We also started a unit on history, where we are exploring what communities, families, technology and places looked like in the past, and why they are significant.

Mathematics

During term 2 in Mathematics, students were expanding their knowledge of 2 digit numbers. They are using a range of concrete materials to help them learn about addition and subtraction strategies. They will be using Unifix blocks, number lines, and tens frames to support this learning.

We have just begun learning about clocks and how they help us tell the hour and half an hour time. Students have started identifying the main features of analogue clocks and what they tell us.

We have also completed our unit of work on Location where students have had to give each other directions to find missing items around our classroom as well as draw simple maps.

Our students were introduced to the concept of length and being able to measure and compare how long or short an item is using informal measuring tools. Towards the end of the term their mathematics focus will shift to reading time to the half hour and becoming familiar with the features of an analogue clock.

English

In English this term students are learning about Recounts. We have explored events and how we can use descriptive vocabulary to describe those events.  When reading, students have been working on identifying the structure of a recount, past tense verbs and time connectives in recount texts.

We will be continuing to extend our students phonemic and phonological awareness skills this term. Last term, students were introduced to the concept of long vowel sounds and different ways these sounds can be represented in written words. This term students will be learning about the following sounds (phonemes) /ar/, /or/, /ir/, /air/, /oo/, /le/ and /ow/.

SWPBS

During SWPBS (School-Wide Positive Behaviour) sessions the Year 1 students are learning about the expected behaviours in the classroom, play areas, sports zones, walkways, canteen and toilets.

The Year 1 students created their Classroom Matrix.

Students have been doing some great work throughout the term so far, and we can't wait to see how their learning will evolve over the rest of the term.
