What's Been Happening in Art

This semester has been an exciting journey of learning and creativity! Our Art room had a revamp over the holidays with sky high ceilings, new paint and partitioning.

Prep students practised drawing to understand basic concepts like colour, shape, and composition and explored pop art techniques and created vibrant, bold artwork of themselves!

Year 1 students explored Pop Art by creating various artworks such as the Emoji piece where the students picked their favourite four Emojis to draw and coloured them with vibrant and complementary colours.

Year 2 students enhanced their observational skills by drawing detailed scenes like Big Ben and the Eiffel Tower. They learned to capture details accurately and maintain proportion. Inspired by Andy Warhol, they explored pop art with vibrant colours and repetition, creating delicious oil pastel cupcakes, donuts and even shoes!

Year 3 students created collages, combining different textures and shapes, to express their individuality and make sailing boats on textured oceans. Inspired by Pop art and old fashioned theatres they made popcorn pop art challenging themselves to draw 2 point perspective boxes!

Year 4 students explored contrast by creating a Pop Art piece of their favourite sport ball. The students learned about Andy Wharhol and how he used vibrant and contrasting colours to make the subject of his artwork stand out and attract the viewers’ attention.

Year 5 students have been mastering one-point perspective drawings using pastels and sketching techniques, creating artworks with parallel lines converging to a single vanishing point. Check out some of their works below. They designed their own pop art style shoes showing off various patterns and colours.

Year 6 students mastered the art of creating vibrant pop art portraits, applying bold colours, graphic shapes, and repetition. They learnt how to draw technical portraits and used iconic pop art elements like comic book-style dots and bold outlines to stylize their portraits. Check out some photos below!

What's Been Happening in Music

Celebrating a Melodious Term!

This term has been a symphony of excitement and learning in our Music Department, highlighted by two incredible incursions that have left our students inspired and eager for more musical adventures.

Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Visit

At the beginning of the term, we had the privilege of hosting members of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (MSO). This was an extraordinary opportunity for our students from Prep to Year 6 to immerse themselves in the enchanting world of classical music. The focus of this incursion was on Sergei Prokofiev's timeless composition, "Romeo & Juliet."

Our students were not just passive listeners; they became active participants in this musical journey. They interacted with the MSO musicians and played along using untuned percussion instruments. This hands-on experience allowed them to explore the textures and emotions conveyed through Prokofiev's music. The sight of young faces lighting up as they beat their rhythms with professional musicians was truly heartwarming.

Through this incursion, our students gained a deeper appreciation for classical music and learned about the various instruments and their roles in an orchestra. The visit from the MSO has undoubtedly sparked a newfound interest in many of our young musicians, and we look forward to nurturing this enthusiasm in our future music lessons.

Beatboxing with Tom Thum

Yesterday, we had the fantastic opportunity to welcome world-renowned beatboxer Tom Thum to our school. His show, "Live from the Larynx," was nothing short of spectacular. Aimed at our Year 5 and 6 students, this workshop introduced them to the art of beatboxing in a fun and engaging way.

Tom Thum's talent and charisma captivated our students as they learned the basics of beatboxing. The workshop was highly interactive, with students participating in various beatboxing exercises and even creating their own beats. Tom Thum also introduced the concepts of looping music and layering tracks, showing our students how modern technology can be used creatively in music production.

The excitement in the room was palpable as students experimented with sounds and rhythms, discovering the incredible versatility of the human voice, everyone buzzing with excitement.

Both of these incursions have provided our students with unique, hands-on experiences that have enriched their understanding and love for music. We are incredibly grateful to the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and Tom Thum for sharing their expertise and passion with us.

We look forward to more musical adventures in the coming terms and thank you for your continued support in making our Music Department vibrant and dynamic.

Musically yours,
