Learning News 4/5/6

Mrs Amy Phillips

Over the past two Fridays, the boys in 4/5/6 attended our local Men's Shed. During their first visit, the boys had a safety induction and were introduced to some of the tools they would use in subsequent visits. On the next visit, the boys began their first project: a football toss board. They had to use their mathematical skills to find the centre of the board. Working together, they realised the board they were using wasn’t perfectly square, so they marked the closest approximation to the center. They then traced an oval shape using a plate as a guide, and the fun began. Each boy had a turn using a drill and jigsaw to cut the oval shape. Despite it being the first time most of them had used these tools, they did extremely well at staying on their marked line and cutting the oval shape. Both myself and the men at the Men's Shed were very proud of the way they all worked together to solve problems and take turns using the tools.

While the boys were at the Men's Shed, the girls in grades 4/5/6 stayed at school and had some fun too. During the first week, they went into the K1 classroom and assisted with fun rotation activities. All the girls love helping and working with our younger students. The following week, Mrs. Bearman had a special treat planned for them: they worked together to bake and decorate some delicious cookies.

This week, the auditions for Peter Pan were held. Every student who auditioned worked very hard to prepare. The audition panel had an extremely tough job deciding on the cast for each role. The cast list is almost finalised and will be released early next week. The actual performance date hasn’t been decided yet, but it will be sometime at the end of Term 3.

Year 4 Maths

This week Year 4 started there unit on Multiplication. The children have been focusing on skip counting and modelling, describing and record number patterns. The children have enjoyed using concrete materials to explore and create patterns.

Year 5/6 Maths

This week we have started exploring the non-spatial measure of time. We are focusing on converting between 12 and 24-hour time and have looked at the different applications of this. There has been interesting discussion around the times of 12 noon and 12 midnight, and whether they are am or pm. We have discovered that not all airports or airlines are consistent with which time format they use for boarding passes! Next week we look at the meaning of duration and elapsed time.

Creative Arts

4/5/6 have worked hard in creative arts to draw 'Mona Lisa'.
