Aboriginal Education

The Wiritjiribin Word

Term 2 has already offered a range of deadly experiences for students at Camden High School.

We were lucky to host the Burra Bumal Aboriginal Dance workshop. Run in partnership with Campbelltown Arts Centre and the NAISDA Aboriginal Dance College, we learnt from choreographers and performers who have taken the stage both here and abroad and learnt a dance combining traditional Aboriginal dance and hip hop.

Two impressive young ladies, Makayla (Year 9) and Amber (Year 12 – School Captain) connected with their CSIRO Young Indigenous Women’s STEM Academy mentors to discuss upcoming opportunities including camps and workshops and career pathways.

Our GO Foundation Scholars headed out to WSU Campbelltown Campus for their Culture Connect Day, participating in a range of cultural workshops and having the opportunity to yarn with AFL legends Adam Goodes and Michael O’Loughlin. This foundation opens doors for our students and helps set them on the path to success. Anyone with a keen eye watching the Sydney Swans host Carlton in the AFL’s Marngrook Round on Friday 17th May might have caught 3 of our school GO Scholars perform special duties. Larissa (Year 11), Dakota (Year 12) and Mikaylee (CHS graduate of 2023) had the honour of being flag bearers and performing the coin toss for this special match.

We have also seen our Year 7 and 8 ARTucation students complete their pottery works. Their pottery pinch pots, leaves and gum nuts were out of the kiln and our First Nations students and their friends enjoyed putting the finishing touches on their projects which look amazing.

Next, our First Nations students Year 9 and 10 and their invited friends had their turn to participate in ARTucation with great success. Student surveys indicated that they learnt a lot from the drug and alcohol education workshops and enjoyed participating in the art session and discussing other positive outlets or choices they could make if they found themselves in a situation where drugs or alcohol were an option. The art session was run again by Wiradjuri artist Natalie Valiente and students made ceramic Echidnas.
