Mathematics News

Hello Mathematicians,

As Term 2 continues we hope that this term in Maths can be a fruitful and productive one where students continue to engage positively with their work in maths. We believe that with a positive attitude and a willingness to explore, every student can find joy and success in mathematics. Let’s make Term 2 a time of growth, discovery, and enthusiasm for maths!

To help you prepare for the upcoming assessments in Term 2, we’ve compiled a list of important dates and tasks:

Year 7 - Examination with Summary Sheet, Due Week 7, Topics: Computation with Integers and Algebraic Techniques

Year 8 - Examination with Summary Sheet, Due Week 5, Topics: Indices, Pythagoras’ Theorem, and Algebraic Techniques

Year 9 – Examination, Due Week 5, Topics: Financial Mathematics A and Indices A

Year 10

  • 5.1 – Examination with Summary Sheet, Due Week 7, Topics: Indices and Trigonometry
  • 5.2 – Assignment with Validation Task, Due Week 7, Topic: Financial Mathematics
  • 5.3 – Assignment, Due Week 7, Topic: Bivariate Data Analysis

Year 11

  • Numeracy – Investigative Assignment, Due Week 9, Topic: Measurement
  • Standard – Investigative Assignment, Due Week 5, Topic: Perimeter, Area and Volume
  • Advanced – Investigative Assignment, Due Week 4, Topic: Trigonometry
  • Extension – Examination with Summary Sheet, Due Week 5, Topic: Polynomials

Year 12

  • Standard 1, 2, Advanced, Extension – HSC Trial Examinations, Weeks 9-10, Comprehensive examination covering all topics taught so far.

Parents and carers are encouraged to refer to the Assessment Booklet provided at the beginning of the year to stay informed about your child’s upcoming assessments.

Students are encouraged to record these due dates in their planners as well. This proactive approach will help minimise stress and last-minute rushes as the term progresses.

Students are reminded that a calculator will be an essential tool for their learning in maths and completion of their assessment tasks. Please ensure that you have a calculator and are bringing it to class with you for each maths lesson. Calculators can conveniently be purchased from the school office, so don’t hesitate to get what you need to support your learning journey.

Interesting Maths Article: Why is maths important?

This week the Math Faculty have found an excellent interview with Math teacher and youtube sensation Eddie Woo, on the importance of mathematics. The video only runs for 1 minute and 20 seconds and contains a great breakdown of why maths is so important in our society. We encourage you to give it a watch at the link below!

Discover the Inspiration Behind "Hidden Figures"

As you dive deeper into the world of numbers and equations, we have a fantastic movie recommendation that will both inspire and amaze you: Hidden Figures. This incredible film tells the true story of three brilliant African-American women mathematicians—Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson—who played pivotal roles at NASA during the early years of the U.S. space program.

Hidden Figures beautifully showcases the power of mathematics in overcoming challenges and achieving greatness. It highlights how these remarkable women used their mathematical genius to break barriers and contribute to some of NASA's most significant achievements, including John Glenn's historic orbit around the Earth.

By watching Hidden Figures, you’ll see how mathematics is not just a subject confined to the classroom but a powerful tool that can change the world. It’s a story of perseverance, ingenuity, and the incredible impact that dedicated mathematicians can have on society.

Happy viewing!

Homework Club

Just a friendly reminder that Homework Club (TASC) is held on Tuesday afternoons from 3:10 to 4:10. If you find yourself in need of additional assistance with your mathematics coursework outside of regular class hours, this is the perfect opportunity to get the support you need.

Warm regards,
