HEALTH AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION - CURRICULUM OPTIONS

SPECIALISED PHYSICAL EDUCATION STUDIES (SEMESTER 2)
Specialised PE provides students with the opportunity to experience, engage with, and develop a deeper appreciation of a wide variety sports by focusing on the many different aspects involved with competing in elite-level sports. This course aims to offer students the opportunity to engage and experience an introductory representation of the Year 11 ATAR Physical Education Studies course and the Certificate II in Sport, Fitness and Recreation/Physical education Studies General. This course is highly practical in nature and involves many hands-on learning experiences to cover the following topics: .
Topics that are covered in this course include:
- Functional anatomy: understanding how various systems such as the musculoskeletal system, cardiovascular system, & respiratory system work together to produce sport-specific movements.
- Motor Learning: understanding the underlying mechanisms behind how athletes develop skills and how factors such as age and experience affect the requirements of learning such skills. Introductory coaching: understanding, designing and executing individual session plans to teach the skills required for various sports. Students will also be offered the opportunity to put into practice their coaching knowledge and skills during the Year 7 & 8 lightning carnivals and the junior school inter-house carnivals.
- Sports first aid: understanding and practicing different first-aid techniques for common sporting injuries, including RICER and strapping. Students will receive a sports strapping completion certificate as a part of this course.
All students who have an interest in learning more about a variety of sports and sporting opportunities are encouraged to join this course.
A consumables charge of approximately $80.00 will be applied to this course. This will be charged in addition to Tuition Fees.
SPECIALIST FOOTBALL WITH J&J FOOTBALL TRAINING (Semester 1)
The Specialist Football course gives students the opportunity to develop technical skills, fitness, tactical knowledge, and understanding of Football at an elite level. The course includes both classroom and practical sessions run by elite J&J Football Training coaches, and covers advanced technical skills, knowledge of strategies and tactics specific to the game of Football, progressive nutritional requirements, training methods, fitness components, mental skills, and recovery methods for Footballers. There will also be an emphasis on students developing their skills to umpire and coach throughout the course, thus giving them the skills for future employment as a referee and/or coach.
This course is aimed at students who want to develop their skills and tactics to a deeper level and seeks students that already have experience of the game to build a strong and supportive football-specific environment.
Students on this course will be encouraged to participate within ASC and/or at their local community Football club. There will be opportunities for students to play competitively for ASC in the Associated and Catholic Colleges of WA (ACC) competition, School Sport WA (SSWA) competitions as required, and to join and represent the ASC teams which compete in the summer JB 6-a-side competition and Football West winter season, in addition to their club/community commitments.
The Specialist Football program also has access to weekly training sessions and accreditations towards coaching and umpiring certificates through elite coaches at J&J Football Training.
A consumables charge of approximately $80.00 will be applied to this course.
SPECIALIST NETBALL (SEMESTER 1)
The Specialist Physical Education Netball course provides students with the opportunity to develop their practical skills, fitness levels, and knowledge and understanding of tactics in Netball. Additionally, students will learn about principles of training including strength and conditioning, injury prevention and recovery methods. Throughout the course students will learn from guest presenters and coaches and may have the opportunity to watch elite netball matches.
A major priority of the course is to encourage the participation of students in Netball; both at the College and local community level in a playing, officiating and coaching role. Netball students will be expected to try out for and represent the College in interschool competitions, such as Associated and Catholic Colleges of WA (ACC) and School Sport WA (SSWA) competitions and will be encouraged to play at club level.
Students will also be exposed to umpiring and coaching development across the course and will have the opportunity to work towards coaching and umpiring accreditations.
Students should be willing to be actively engaged with the course and the netball community.
SPECIALIST BASKETBALL (SEMESTER 1)
The Specialist Basketball Program provides an opportunity for talented students to extend their abilities in basketball. Personalised teaching and video analysis at an elite level will be implemented to support students in developing their individual skills, team tactics and strategies, allowing them to reach their potential and achieve success in basketball. Students will also study topics that reinforce the importance of fitness, including nutrition, flexibility, strengthening, recovery and endurance. Accredited courses in scoring, officiating and coaching will be available, as well as opportunities to learn from expert guest speakers. Students should be willing to actively engage with the course and the basketball community. There will be opportunities for students to play competitively for the College in Associated and Catholic Colleges of WA (ACC) and School Sport WA (SSWA) competitions competitions.
Please note there are two basketball courses. This one is intended for more elite players and those playing high club or WABL level.
Willetton Basketball Stadium will be used for practical sessions, and a kit will be provided. This course will incur a fee, estimated at $100, which will contribute towards facility hire, transport, equipment and enrolment in accredited courses. This course is aimed at students who are playing at a high level and it is expected that students have a repertoire of advanced skills.
BASKETBALL GENERAL (SEMESTER 2)
The Specialised Basketball General Program provides students with an opportunity to improve their skills, fitness and knowledge about basketball. The course will focus on developing offensive and defensive individual skills, implementing fitness programs and analysing team strategies. Accredited courses in scoring, officiating and coaching will be available to facilitate a range of options for involvement in the basketball and College community.
Students who currently play at club level (in a domestic competition) should opt for this course. This course will incur a fee, estimated at $100, which will contribute towards specialist facility hire, transport, equipment, enrolment in accredited courses and a kit.
RECREATION AND HEALTH FOR LIFE (SEMESTER 2)
The benefits of utilising physical activity and recreational activities as a vehicle for holistic wellness is becoming more crucial every year.
Through participation in a variety of activities students have the opportunity to become proactive and gain knowledge and understanding of health wellbeing through outdoor recreational pursuits alongside more traditional fitness methods. Students can chose from a variety of activities that include 10 pin bowling, mini golf, lawn bowls, yoga, meditation, Pilates, walking, stand up, a variety of fitness classes, cooking, reading, dancing, music,, swimming, social sport and bike riding. Students are also able to suggest activities that haven’t previously been included and partake in those activities throughout the course. Students will partake in activities on and off the campus.
This course will provide students with the tools and up to date information about wellness to encourage them to prioritise their own wellbeing whilst at the College and in their future.
At All Saints’ College, students pursue this concept through the outdoors and along the way, they will explore the benefits that exposure to the outdoors and the unstructured lifestyle can bring. In particular, students will focus on identifying these benefits and translating them into real world, usable skills that promote resilience and life awareness. This course combines recreational activities with wellness and is suited to all levels.

AQUATIC STUDIES: BIKE, BOAT AND BOARD (SEMESTER 2)
This course will develop skills, knowledge and safe attitudes for numerous aquatic and land based environments. Although this is a practical based unit, students will take part in some theory exploring the importance of sustainability, keeping our world clean and healthy and understanding weather and its impacts. All units in Bike, Boat and Board develop teamwork, leadership, cooperation and communication skills. Students must be able to competently swim 400 metres and tread water for five minutes to select this course.
- Surfing – Students will learn basic skills including how to paddle a board and how to stand up. A theme of water safety will be an overarching focus where students will learn to identify different wave and rip types.
- Rowing – Students will learn about the parts of a boat, how to rig their craft and stroke technique.
- Triathlon – During the unit students will develop their swimming, running and bike riding skills, and transitions between each leg. Students will have the chance to participate in an Interschool competition as individuals or as teams if they wish
RLSS Bronze Star/Medallion qualification – Students will have the chance to acquire their Bronze Star or Medallion qualification which will be valid for the year. This is a necessary requirement if students wish to obtain jobs around water environments. Students must be able to competently swim 400 metres and tread water for five minutes.
Consumables charge of approximately $170.00 per student will be applied to this course. This will be charged in addition to Tuition Fees.
AQUATIC STUDIES: WIND WATER WAVES (SEMESTER 1)
This course will develop skills, knowledge and safe attitudes for numerous aquatic environments. Throughout this is a practical based unit, students will take part in some theory exploring the importance of wind, waves and water in our world. Students must be able to competently swim 400 metres and tread water for five minutes to select this course.
STAND UP PADDLE BOARDING: Students will learn skills including how to leave and return to the beach safely, self-rescue techniques and numerous stroke and turning techniques on flat water. These sessions will take place off campus at Point Walter on the Swan River.
SAILING: Will see students learn about the anatomy of a sailing boat including how to correctly rig a boat. They will develop the ability to read the wind and weather conditions and to apply the correct techniques to enhance performance. Students will learn to leave and return to the beach safely, self-rescue if capsizing, jibe and tact. Students will be instructed by external sailing professional offsite at South Perth Foreshore.
DIVING: Will see students travel to HBF Stadium to learn the sport of Diving. Students will learn the skills of springboard and platform diving, under the watchful and very experienced WA diving instructors.
SYNCHRONISED SWIMMING: Students will be given the opportunity to try one of Australia’s fastest growing sports. Instructors from Synchronised Swimming WA will teach the students the physical and artistic skills required in synchronised swimming.
RECREATIONAL SKIPPERS TICKET (RST): Students will have the opportunity to acquire their skippers’ ticket. The unit will cover the theoretical component of the course, preparing students to sit the written examination part of this qualification. Students must be able to competently swim 400 metres and tread water for five minutes. If students wish to take up this opportunity, this will be arranged by the teacher at an additional cost.
Consumables charge of approximately $170.00 per student will be applied to this course. This will be charged in addition to Tuition Fees.
OUTDOOR EDUCATION – DOUGLAS (SEMESTER 1)
Renowned WA adventurer and conservationist, Malcolm Douglas was driven by his love of the Australian bush and its wildlife. He believed passionately in the sanctity of the Kimberley and fought most of his life for its preservation.
This course is designed to provide outdoor skills, knowledge and attitudes for safe outdoor participation. The course includes practical and theoretical sessions where students work to improve important lifelong ‘soft skills’ such as organisation, personal preparation, time management and working with others, as part of a group and as a leader. The students will take part in:
- Mountain Bike Riding – How to maintain and service a bike, identifying various parts, complete an eight-point safety check, how to perform a variety of skills on various surfaces and river locations.
- Canoeing – The techniques and skills of Canoeing, using the correct equipment and safety components whilst journeying on the Canning River.
- Sustainability – the definition of environmental, social and economic sustainability, reduce, reuse, recycle, how to create and maintain a vegetable garden, repurposing plastic using partnerships with Propeller Enterprise, how to shred and remould plastic, conducting a sustainability audit at school and at home and understanding the implications for now and future generations.
- Bush Cooking – Camp craft skills including fire lighting, cooking and hygiene, minimum impact techniques, safety skills and preparing fuel for camping and camp craft activities
- Camp Skills – How to manage yourself, your equipment and your group in a camp environment. How to safely recreate in the outdoors, minimising the environmental impact on recreation areas, mountain biking, canoeing, sustainability and cooking in a camp environment.
The students will be involved in leadership development and environmental awareness. The goal of the course is for students to develop practical skills and for them to contribute towards a sustainable world. Students will enjoy both practical and theoretical sessions during the semester. The cost of this unit is approximately $180.
OUTDOOR EDUCATION – BLAIR (SEMESTER 2)
Lisa Blair is an incredible ambassador for climate change and the first woman to sail solo around Antarctica in a six-month journey, unassisted.
This course is designed to provide outdoor skills, knowledge and attitudes for safe outdoor participation. The course includes practical and theoretical sessions students work to improve important lifelong ‘soft skills’ such as organisation, personal preparation, time management and working with others, as part of a group and as a leader. The students will take part in the following units:
- Kayaking – Learn Kayaking skills on flat water including safety skills, equipment management, teamwork and communication at Shelley Foreshore.
- Bush Cooking – Camp craft skills including fire lighting, cooking and hygiene, minimum impact techniques, safety skills and preparing fuel for camping and camp craft activities
- Bush Walking – Learn Bush Walking skills on a variety of trails around Perth. Skills include but are not limited to; pack fitting, theoretical and practical hiking skills, safety, leave no trace, weather interpretation and prior planning and preparation.
- Camp Skills – How to manage yourself, your equipment and your group in a camp environment. How to safely recreate in the outdoors, minimising the environmental impact on recreation areas, kayaking, bush walking, sustainability and cooking in a camp environment
- Camp – Three day, two night camp at Dwellingup
The students will also be involved in leadership development and environmental awareness throughout each unit. Students will enjoy both practical and theoretical sessions during the year. The course culminates in a camp where the focus is on safe and successful outdoor learning while practising the skills learnt throughout the year. There is a camp cost of approximately $180.
CIRCUS SKILLS - SEMESTER 1
