Grade 4

Reading

Over the past two weeks, students have explored a text about Maple Syrup. This text walked through the process of how maple syrup is made, linking closely into our writing focus of explanation texts. Students explored annotating, word spokes, questioning, analysing the text, and vocabulary work.

Writing

This week the grade 4’s have continued looking at explanation texts. They were given the opportunity to plant their own bean seeds as part of the explanation process. They are beginning to write the explanation that they followed when growing their own seed. They have also learned the technical language that comes with growing seeds.

Maths

Students have begun data collection in the classroom in preparation for developing their own picture graphs and column graphs. Students have had the opportunity to survey friends, make observations and conduct an experiment to collect data.

Data collection 1: Students created a survey question of their choosing and walked around the classroom to survey their peers. By the end of the lesson, students had a chart full of tally marks in each option!

Data collection 2: We made an observation in each classroom about the amount of rubbish being brought into school in our lunch boxes. We used tally marks to collect our data. We found plastic wrappers were the most common piece of rubbish brought into the classroom!

Data collection 3: Students needed to record how many times their table group could throw a pom pom into the cup! Using the tally marks collected, students were able to identify who got the most scores in the cup, and who got the least.

In the next week, students will begin to transfer this data into picture graphs and column graphs.

Respectful Relationships

Recently in Respectful Relationships, we have had a focus on respect. Respect is the foundation of healthy relationships. It means treating others the way we want to be treated – with kindness, empathy, and consideration. Whether it's listening attentively to a friend or appreciating different perspectives, respect forms the cornerstone of positive interactions. We have had a focus on how our words can affect others.

Integrated

So far in Geography we have looked at Climate, Weather, Biomes and the importance of Vegetation. This week students are excitedly learning about the diverse animals found in different biomes around the world. They are discovering how animals adapt to their environments in places like the rainforest, desert, tundra, and ocean. For instance, they learned that in the rainforest, colorful parrots and stealthy jaguars thrive among the dense foliage, while in the desert, camels and scorpions are well-suited to the harsh, dry conditions. In the icy tundra, polar bears and arctic foxes have special adaptations to survive the cold. Meanwhile, in the ocean, students are fascinated by creatures like dolphins, sharks, and vibrant coral reef fish. Through interactive activities and engaging discussions, students are gaining a deeper understanding of how each animal's unique traits help them live and prosper in their specific biomes.
