Grade 2
Term 2 for Year 2 students has been a blast at Grayling Primary School… Here is what we have been up to!
Initialit:
Over the last few weeks, we have been learning about lots of different digraphs, suffix words and prefix words. We have learnt how a prefix changes the meaning of the word, and can even make it an opposite word! Like how the word ‘lock’ becomes ‘unlock’ when you add the prefix ‘un’. Right now we are learning how CH can make a /CH/ sound (like in Cherry) or a /K/ sound (like in Christmas).
Maths:
We have now finished our work on addition and subtraction strategies for now, and have moved on to Fractions. Our students have been learning how to split a shape, or a group of objects into halves (½), quarters (¼) and eighths (⅛). We look forward to applying this knowledge to some cooking activities next week!
Writing:
This week we started our new unit on writing procedures! We had lots of fun on Tuesday when we got together with all the Grade 2’s and Mrs Allwright did a literal reenactment of our instructions on how to make a sandwich, which we wrote the day before. One student did not say where to spread the vegemite, so Mrs Allwright spread it on her cheek! Everyone was laughing so much and we learnt how important it was to write accurate instructions.
National Simultaneous Storytime 2024
On 22nd of May 2024, the whole school, including the Grade 2’s participated in the National Simultaneous Storytime 2024. We read Bowerbird Blues by Aura Parker and learnt how Bowerbirds collect blue items to add to their nest to attract a partner bird. We talked about how the blues could mean his colour, but also the bird’s feelings while he was searching for someone to love him. Then we coloured in beautiful mandalas with all the colours of our emotions.
