Initia Lit- Reading
In Reading this past fortnight, we've been introduced to some new friends and sounds – Eric Elephant, Nigel Numbat and Gary Gecko! These friendly characters have been helping to make learning letter names and sounds that little bit easier.
In our StoryBook sessions, we've explored the book ‘The Potato People’. Through this story, we've discussed the beginnings, middles, and ends. We've made connections beyond the texts and explored the meaning of vocabulary like gradually, drooped, and exclaimed
We have continued using our sound knowledge to segment and blend CV (consonant vowel) and CVC (consonant vowel consonant) words. They've been having a go at reading words like dim, dot, sat, sip, mot, fed, hem, pet, red.
And, we have also introduced some tricky words – words that have tricky parts that cannot be sounded out! We've regularly practised and looked at "a", "the", "my", "is", "I", “was”, “you”, “to”, “they”, and “that”.
Maths -
In Maths this past fortnight, our little mathematicians have made impressive strides in expanding their number knowledge. We have been confidently counting to 10, matching quantities from 0-10, making and representing these quantities, sequencing numbers from 0-10, learning 3-letter number names and practising number formation. Students engaged in counting and making collections using various manipulatives to test and strengthen their number knowledge. We played interactive games like number name hopscotch, number name bingo, and "I have-who has" to reinforce our understanding of number names. Formation chants helped us remember how to write numerals, which we then practised by writing in shaving cream, using paint brushes and water outside, and writing on whiteboards. To master the correct sequence of numbers 0-10, we created sequencing necklaces, played a caterpillar sequencing game on the iPads and filled in missing numbers in sequencing strips. Each week we are noticing the Prep students becoming more and more confident with the numbers 0-10 and all the different ways these numbers can be represented.
