Foundation/Year 1

Reconciliation Week

Last week was reconciliation week. Students have done a variety of activities, exposing them to the importance of the Aboriginal culture. Students played two traditional Indigenous Games (Kangaroo and Kai), looked at the Aboriginal Flag, listened to stories like The Rainbow Serpent, How the birds got their colours and Come Together, and they went on a symbol search.

Maths

Over the last few weeks we have been focusing on length in maths. Students have been exploring measuring how long something is using a range of materials including blocks, counters and icy pole sticks. Students have identified if something is long/short in comparison to other objects.

Year 2

Reconciliation Week

We had the pleasure of Scarlett and Macey sharing a presentation about their own dream time story books they got when they were in Broome, they shared their understanding of Indigenous symbols, the language they learnt and artefacts they have collected. The Year 2’s also discussed the map of Victoria and identified the different parts of the land around us.

Literacy

Over the last two weeks, the Year 2’s have been working on the text based unit Rose Meets Mr. Wintergarten. We have identified the vocabulary in the text and discussed each word's meaning and word families, described the characters; their appearance and their personalities, unpacked the structure of a narrative and our favourite part, and compared the text to another text - Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge. We really enjoyed identifying the similarities and differences between these two texts.

Maths

This week during Maths, the Year 2’s have begun learning about Money. Identifying the coins, describing each of them and ordering them according to their value. We have been adding different coins together and working out the total of multiple coins.

Year 3/4

We have been very busy in the 3/4 Inquiry unit focusing on our environment and the opportunity to be an agent for change both nationally and globally.  These past few weeks we have explored…

  • Photosynthesis - life cycles
  • Forestation - the impact of deforestation and to consider the ethical choices we have
  • Ecosystems - explore the ecosystems we have around us
  • Rainforest - explore the rainforest through a virtual tour of an African rainforest
  • Vegetation and animals of Africa - learn about the different types of vegetation and some native animals in Africa

…in preparation for choosing and researching an endangered animal.

Year 5/6

Literacy

Students have been busy working on the book Fox during our text-based unit. They have been making inferences and exploring the writing techniques authors use to engage readers. We have analysed the meaning of words and their impact in creating a message that deals with emotions. Understanding the importance of main points when summarising has allowed us to create summaries of this book.

Numeracy

We have spent the last week understanding fractions. The students have been adding fractions with both like and unlike denominators by identifying the Lowest Common Multiple (LCM). We have also explored the relationship between mixed numbers and improper fractions and how they relate to each other. Additionally, our daily retrieval grid, which covers all math's areas, continues to help the students reflect on their prior learning throughout the term and apply their knowledge to problem-solving.

Inquiry

We have begun our research into natural disasters and extreme weather conditions, focusing on how we prepare for these events before, during, and after they occur. The students have been very enthusiastic, using the internet to gather information, and we look forward to viewing their presentations later this term.

Religion

This term, we have been focusing on understanding the importance of special sacraments by exploring their rituals, symbols, and relevance in our daily lives. We will continue to deepen our understanding of these sacraments and each student will create a personal symbol representing their chosen sacrament. This project will help them express their own interpretation and connection to the sacrament.

Reconciliation Week

Last week, Miss Eade's class spent time learning about Reconciliation Week. Together, we read a meaningful text, focusing on words that represent the essence of reconciliation. Students highlighted these significant words and creatively incorporated them into a WordArt project. Additionally, we were privileged to have Macey share her rich knowledge of Indigenous culture, providing the class with a deeper understanding and appreciation.
