Spotlight on Learning - Solar

Cheap Houses!

For the last two weeks, Solar has been learning about the relationships between perimeter, area and 2D shapes. Students have spent the last 4 lessons learning about what shapes will give us the largest area while considering their perimeters. They have been calculating areas of polygons, circles and irregular shapes with curved sides.

The final part of the project is to design the cheapest house with the following parameters:

  • External walls: $1500 per metre
  • Internal walls: $1200 per metre
  • Foundations and roof: $700 per square metre
  • The bedrooms and bathrooms must have four walls.
  • Design is drawn on grid paper with all measurements labelled/with a scale

Students have had a lot of fun drawing house designs and experimenting with shapes. The houses had to be livable in the real world, with students having to consider how big a regular bedroom or bathroom should be. Check out some of the designs!
