Year 1 Team

We have had a wonderful start to the school year! Students have settled into their routines beautifully and are enjoying their time in the classroom. It has been fantastic to see them engaged in their learning, building friendships, and showing enthusiasm for new experiences.
Literacy
This year, we have introduced a new Core Literacy program called Phonics Plus. Students are actively exploring how to apply sounds to speak, read, and spell words. They have been learning about suffixes, including plurals and past tense, as well as practising fluency, dictation, and handwriting. In English, we have been reading a variety of engaging books to explore the theme of Resilience which has provided excellent opportunities for students to learn about overcoming challenges. Through the books, students have been practising comprehension strategies such as predicting and retelling, while also analysing main characters and their traits.
Maths
In Maths students have been diving into numbers 1-120, discovering how to order them, represent them on number lines, and use hands-on materials to show numbers. During our topic of Duration, they have been able to connect learning with real-life experiences, time and their everyday lives as we have explored days of the week, months of the year and the changing seasons. Our focus on Partitioning has sparked curiosity and excitement, as students break down numbers in multiple ways, explore place value, and discover how numbers are built.
Wellbeing
Through our Respectful Relationships program, students have been forming meaningful connections with one another, fostering a sense of belonging and teamwork. They have been engaging in thoughtful discussions and role-play about keeping their bodies safe, building a happy and safe classroom, and understanding the many emotions we experience. During our School Wide Positive Behaviour sessions, students have demonstrated an understanding of our school values and how they can show them across the school day.
It has been a fantastic start to the year and we look forward to what the students will achieve in the second half of Term 1. Year 1 Team, Belle Hannan, Jess Wallace, Claire Ferlauto
