VISUAL ARTS NEWS

On Tuesday 25 February, VCE Art Making and Exhibiting students embarked on an exciting excursion to the Geelong Gallery, where they had the opportunity to explore the world of art and exhibitions via an overview of the methods involved in the presentation of artworks at Geelong Gallery. Students were able to gain an understanding of the processes and considerations involved in displaying artworks in a public art gallery, and of the roles and the tasks undertaken when preparing and presenting artworks for an exhibition.
Upon arrival, students were greeted by the gallery's knowledgeable education officer, who guided them through the exhibits, explaining curatorial, historical and cultural significances behind the displays. This trip not only provided a unique learning experience but also sparked creativity and broadened our Year 11 and 12 students’ understanding of both art making, and exhibiting, essential to their VCE program.
The excursion was a great opportunity for students to step outside the classroom and to immerse themselves in the creative industry. Overall, the gallery excursion was a team building and enriching experience that will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact on the students’ appreciation and analysis of art and exhibitions. We look forward to our next gallery visit in the future!
A big thank you to all the students, teachers and staff who helped make this excursion a success!
The following day I was fortunate to be able to attend the opening night of the Future Creatives exhibit, again at Geelong Gallery. Showcasing and celebrating the creative talents of art and design students from across the region who completed their Victorian Certificate of Education in 2024, this exhibition also features the spectacular work “Transition” by Oberon High School’s very own Grace McConachy (Class of 2024).
Grace, as one of only nine students selected for this exhibition, is now also in the running for a paid internship opportunity at the Geelong Gallery, along with mentoring and professional development support with her tertiary studies in art and design during 2025. Please show your support and visit the gallery, or online at: https://www.geelonggallery.org.au/whats-on/exhibitions/2025-future-creatives for more information. What an amazing opportunity! We wish Grace and all the students from the Class of 2024 all the best in their future endeavours.
Keep creating!
