Anna Blatman

This term the Grade 1 and 2 students have been studying still lifes and the work of Australian artist Anna Blatman. First the students began by practising their still life drawing skills, they chose from a variety of objects such as vases, flowers and fruits and composed them in an interesting way. The students sketched these drawings in their diaries, studying the shape of the objects, and the light and shade.

The students then learnt about Melbourne based artist Anna Blatman, whose work is currently being celebrated in a new stationery and home decor collaboration with Officeworks. Inspired by her works of vases and flowers, the students first mixed a tertiary colour (a mix of primary and secondary colours) and painted their own vases. Using balloons which were dipped in paint, the students then printed their colourful flowers all around the top of the vase.

The next step was to paint the table and the negative space around the flowers, the original colour of the table was mixed with black paint to create a shade. Finally, the green stems were painted in between the flowers and then the students added a pattern to the vase. The students did such an amazing job through every step, here are some finished flowers in their vases, because of the creative decisions each student made along the way they all look so different!
