Level 4

Reading
Having now completed reading, analysing and discussing the book My Place, Level 4 has started watching the ABC iView TV series which is based on the book. So far we have watched an analysed two episodes, both about convict children who were sent from England to Australia. We have been busy comparing and contrasting the book with the series, thinking deeply about the characters and their lives and making connections between these characters, our own lives and the information we are learning in our Inquiry topic.
Writing
Level 4 has completed our unit of work on narratives and are now moving to work on creating information reports. This fits in beautifully with our Inquiry topic of Australian history. To warm ourselves up to what makes an information report sensational, we completed writing pieces about Heathmont East Primary School and now we are going to be writing one about our chosen European explorer from our Inquiry topic. Get ready at home to start hearing some fun facts about Burke and Wills, Abel Tasman, Captain Cook to name a few!
Maths
The past few weeks have been focused on addition and subtraction processes. We are learning a range of mental strategies to solve these problems, figuring out which strategy to use for which problem and which ones make more sense to us. It is also important that we learn about where in the real world we need to use these skills, solving a variety of worded problems, choosing which sign we need to use when, and completing the problem accurately. In the meantime there are of course, games to be played to practice our skills!
Inquiry
Our Inquiry topic is now firmly linked with our Reading and Writing lessons. We are learning about the stories of convicts through our Reading lessons as well as separate Inquiry lessons. One of our Inquiry lessons (pictured below), involved completing a thinking routine after viewing some paintings from around the time of the First Fleet arrival.
Our main focus for the remainder of the term will be our projects related to our chosen explorer. We will not only complete an information report about them but also a Google Slides presentation including pictures, maps and text.
