GWR Senior Tennis

The Greater Western Regional Senior Tennis finals were held on Wednesday the 5th of March at Ballarat Tennis Centre. Our competitors were Annie, Paolo, Tom and Harry. Our first match was against an extremely skilful, well-coached Horsham team. Despite playing some great tennis we were unable to win a set but continued giving it our best shot right until the end.

Our next match was against a combined Balmoral/Edenhope team. This was a tight match with some great skills on display. The end result was 3 sets all but BSC lost on games.

Two features that stood out were the improvement shown by all players from the first hit to the last, and the magnificent on and off court behaviour shown by our players. This was often mentioned by other schools' players and coaches. Well done to Annie, Paolo, Tom and Harry for making it to the GWR stage and representing Beaufort Secondary College so well!

Senior Volleyball

On Tuesday the 11th of March, Beaufort Secondary College took two mixed teams to Daylesford to compete against other schools in the Eureka Division Senior Volleyball tournament.

After a long drive, with plenty of road works, we were straight into our first game upon arrival. Beaufort A played Phoenix B first. In the first set, Rylee Jacka put on a great display with some strong returns, helping Beaufort secure a 21-19 win. The second set was a hard-fought battle, but thanks to Nic Stares' excellent serving, Beaufort clinched the victory 24-22.

In the second game, Beaufort A competed against Ballarat High School, who were looking strong, and along with Daylesford, were the favourites to win. Despite a valiant effort from Cooper Cahill and Kita Cooper, we were unable to win a set against them.

In the third and final game, we were determined to get another win, this time against the mid-table Mount Clear. After a slow start from us we were eventually able to get in the game, with Lachlan Fraser's powerful serving and Manaia Cooper making some crucial sets and digs. Although the start was close, Mount Clear got the upper hand, and after a big day, the wheels came off and Mount Clear comfortably took the win in the second set. We ended the day third, in Pool A.

Meanwhile, Beaufort B lined up against a strong Phoenix A team. They dominated the first set, winning 21-15. Despite some incredible dive saves from Paolo and Harry, we fell short in the second set 13-21, giving Phoenix A the overall win. We took this match as our warm-up and refocused for the next game.

With little rest, we went straight into our second game against Mount Rowan. We started strong with Josh Fraser's outstanding serving and Matilda Venes' precise sets, taking the first set 21-9. The second set was much closer. Liam Sage made some fantastic blocks, and the set ups by Annie were perfect, but despite our efforts, we lost 16-21. This meant we had to play a third set.

After a pep talk from Miss Hughes, we came out determined to win. Josh continued his excellent serving, and Luka’s powerful spikes earned us key points. Beaufort sealed the win 15-5, before advancing to the next round.

Our final pool game was against Daylesford, the school of volleyball. After a long, exhausting day in a hot gym, we struggled to keep up, losing the first set 8-21 and the second 14-21.

Beaufort A and Beaufort B both placed 3rd in their pools, meaning they had to play each other. Due to running out of time on Tuesday, the teams played each other at lunch time on Wednesday. The results were; A team won the first set, 21-10, while B team, determined to walk away with a win, took the second set 21-16. This led to a play off set, first to 15. Beaufort B had a easy win due to some communication failures from team A. Beaufort B won, 15 to 6.

This means Beaufort B placed 5th and Beaufort A placed 6th on the overall leader board.

Thank you to Mr Webb for driving the bus and coaching Team A and to Miss Hughes for organising the event and coaching Team B. It was a fun day.

Junior Triathlon

On Sunday March 16th, Milly Kerr, Maddison Wade and Thea Baker headed to Ballarat to compete in the Junior Triathlon.

The girls were in for a cold and wet day, with the weather not on our side. The first leg of the triathlon was a 400m swim in the Aquatic Centre. Once complete, the girls ran to the first transition to jump on their bikes. The bike leg was 6kms, meaning 4 laps of a very muddy track. Despite this, the girls flew around as quickly as they could. The final leg consisted of two laps of the BHS oval, equalling a 1km run. With some jelly legs from the ride, the girls pushed on and finished with some fantastic times. Milly, Maddi and Thea did an amazing job representing Beaufort Secondary College and should be extremely proud of their efforts!

Thea - 31:42mins - 13/70 overall

Maddison - 33:19mins - 19/70 overall

Milly - 34:00mins- 20/70 overall
