Ephesians 2: 10
“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”
In my efforts to find some photographs of my childhood as I contemplated our 50 years celebratory theme this term of “Hopeful Heritage”, I have been struck once again how incredible the process of genealogy is.
My dad, all his known relatives and all my siblings, have blue eyes. My mum, however, has a faint hazel colour (if you look at her eyes in the right light) – and then there’s me! I am the only one with dark brown eyes… that is, until my son, and now my grandson, was born.
In looking at photos of a little blonde haired, brown eyed little me, I also see the strong resemblance in the photos I have of both James, my son, and Levi, my grandson. There’s something very familiar about the way they look, and even though they would probably be horrified to hear this, they remind me of my own childhood in the way they engage with people, chatter with people and value time spent with others, especially family.
And yet, whilst I see lots of little resemblances, it goes without saying that each of us are uniquely ourselves, with many individual traits, personality quirks and interests that make us who we truly are.
Each Tuesday I have the privilege of standing in front of our Primary School students at our weekly assembly. I love these times of gathering, and the learning that we can do as a community together.
Sharing foundational truths with them is both an honour and a joy – and we delight in reminding our students that they each have been fearfully and wonderfully made – all with unique characteristics, personalities, interests and giftings.
Our deep hope is that our students will understand that who they are matters. They are:
Our prayer is that our students will also understand ‘whose they are’ – a child of Christ, each with incredible potential to live, to love and to serve well, both now as young children in community at DCC, and in the years to come as they step into all God has prepared in advance for them to do.
Please join me in praying for our teachers and our parent community, as together we seek to help our students truly know that they are wonderfully created!
