CLASSROOM NEWS!

Weekly Fun in P/1

Another busy, but fun fortnight with our little people! Every week so far has been full of fun, learning and new experiences. During literacy we have continued to build upon our writing skills in lots of different ways. The Prep's have been learning how to form the letter 'm' and 's', as well as ensuring the pictures they draw tell a detailed story to match their writing. The Grade 1 students have been learning to develop an idea to write about and include lots of interesting details to engage their audience. During maths, the Grade 1 students are learning about partitioning two-digit numbers using concrete materials, while the Preps are consolidating the numbers 0-10 through picture story books and hands on materials. Last Friday, the P/1 students participated in Clean Up Australia Day by collecting rubbish around our school grounds. They did a wonderful job, and were quite amazed at how much they collected.

Just a reminder that the Grade 1 home readers are checked and changed every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. These are the only days that the reader folders need to be returned to school. Reading at home with your child is an extremely valuable activity that promotes a love of literature, as well as an opportunity for them to show you what reading skills and strategies they are working on at school. We strongly encourage all families to spend 10-15 minutes 4-5 times per week listening to your child read, and afterwards, having conversation with them about the book.

Don't forget - school photos this Thursday 6th.

News from the 2/3 room

This week we have had a busy week in the 2/3 classroom. In Literacy, we have been hard at work doing a group research and note-taking project to create informative texts on spiny leaf insects. Students have learnt about taking key ideas to make dot-point notes, and transferring this knowledge into paragraphs.

In Maths, the students have focused on fractions this week. We ended our lesson sequence with a whole class activity about sharing chocolate bars, using our 'act it out' problem solving strategy to solve the problem: which table can I sit at to get the most chocolate when shared equally? The table with 1, 2 or 3 chocolate bars?

As a final note, due to our friend Iggy Russell (our spiny leaf insect) becoming unwell, we have got a new friend on the way soon! Watch this space!

4/5/6 News

In Math's, we have been busy measuring perimeter. The weather was nice and sunny so we headed outside to measure some perimeters in real life. Later in the week, we learnt how to calculate the perimeter of a compound shape with missing sides! Very challenging but also very fun! This week we moved on to subtraction. We have been learning how to subtract large numbers and how to check our answers using addition.

In Literacy, we have continued reading our class novel 'The Wild Robot'. Students have improved their note-taking skills to be able to summarise or identify the main events of the chapter. They are also recognising when they don't understand the meaning of a word within the text and using a range of strategies to work out the meaning, such as, looking it up in a dictionary or using context from the story to work it out. In writing, we have been focusing on constructing different sentence types (simple, compound and complex) and have been covering some spelling rules (e.g. adding prefixes and suffixes) and grammar (conjunctions, adverbs, etc.).
