Cyber Security

Year 7 Students Tackle Cyber Security at Quantum Victoria

On Friday, 7th March, our 7J students stepped into the world of cyber security at Quantum Victoria (QV), participating in an innovative, game-based learning experience. Working collaboratively in teams, they faced scenario-based challenges designed to test their problem-solving and critical thinking skills.

Their mission? To restore security at Cretaceous Cove, a prehistoric wildlife reserve thrown into chaos by a cyber breach. With communication cut off and gates stuck open, students played the role of Cyber Security Experts, working through workshops on passwords, ciphers, and phishing to regain control.

This hands-on experience highlighted the real-world importance of cyber security and teamwork, leaving students both challenged and inspired. A huge thanks to Quantum Victoria for an engaging and educational day!

On Friday the 7th of March, 7J enjoyed the Cyber Security Educational Escape Room Experience at Quantum Victoria. We immersed ourselves in a team-based innovative learning experience focusing on Cyber Security. The tabletop Escape Room was fun and engaging, however I personally enjoyed stages 2 and 3.

These activities focused on password cracking and Caesar ciphers, both tasks I really enjoyed. I worked in a team with Xave and Rohan and together we cracked the password and solved the ciphers to victory! The difficulty level was quite simple, yet difficult at the same time. We as a class demonstrated team building and practical problem solving. Upon reflection, the puzzles were fun to solve and a great way to share the day as a class still getting to know each other.

I enjoyed hanging out with my friends and we had very fun time on that day, the most entertaining part was the first puzzle in the beginning, every got stuck on it because of the order it was placed it, it was very interesting how the fake email was written in. I learnt many new things and I have used many of my skills during the puzzles, for example, Puzzle 2, it was very helpful for me to use my skills in latitude and longitude, it helped the team. Additionally, I learnt how to use the Caeser Cipher, and it was very interesting to use, it was very fun to use, and it taught me a very key thing to help to keep my passwords safe.

At the escape room we visited I really enjoyed working in a group and collaborating to try to solve a password with a computer. I loved the last activity because it came together and made me think more.  We completed activities on how easy it is to hack your password, different ciphers and learning about keys. We mainly focused on scams and hacks though.

I really enjoyed it and would like to go back but one improvement I think they could work on is the robot voice and pictures that aren't from a movie.

During our escape room excursion, I found the different activities very engaging and fun due to the multiple problems we had to solve to escape, and how we worked with multiple different people. In my opinion, the key activity, where we learnt how a key works and cracking the code, was the most fun because of the multiple aspects involved in cracking the code, such as measuring and scaling the numbers.

Throughout the entire experience, we investigated many topics while also having fun deciphering the code. Additionally, we got a brief overview of the beautiful facility and its different sections. Although it was an amazing experience, some flaws that I experienced we didn’t get to choose who our group was which made the tasks less fun, but otherwise it was an amazing experience, and I am grateful I was able to be participate in it.

I found the experience entertaining and interesting; I learnt a lot of new things in relation to cyber-security. Something that I really enjoyed was the decipher puzzle, I had a pre-understanding of ciphers and learning about how a Caesar Cipher works was very intriguing to learn. I would describe my experience as a new, and creative type of excursion in which the story and roleplay masking the lesson of cyber-security was very engaging.

Each topic was taught hands-on and interactively which made learning so exciting and interesting. A few things I took from the lesson were how keys function and the process of measuring keys. I found it rather surprising from when I saw the most common passwords and that it’s important to have multiple passwords for different accounts. The most interesting thing that I learnt throughout the excursion was how easy it is to scam and trick people, and the types of ways scammers trick people.

On the 7th of March 7J attended an escape room excursion. The opportunity consisted of three table top activities based on an imaginary security breach at Jurassic Park. My favourite activity was ‘Password Panic’, and it was by far the most exciting and thought provoking one of the three projects I took part of. The entire experience was based off the importance of cyber security and I learned much about strong security online. We learned about how the amount we share online is incredibly important. Although I enjoyed working with my team, I personally think some of the activities were a bit boring, but I overall I think this was a great experience and I enjoyed it.
