Library News

Our library is a busy space with many students choosing to spend their free time in the library reading books, playing our board games or puzzles and enthusiastically participating in the activities we run at recess and lunchtimes. It is great to see students enjoying themselves in fun and collaborative friendship groups.

A fundamental part of the library’s role is to encourage an ongoing love of reading, and we provide many opportunities to support this aim.

Our school is a proud Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge (VPRC) school, and we support all Year 7 students to participate in the challenge as well as any interested Year 8, 9, and 10 students. The library team are well into teaching our wider reading program based around the VPRC. We began the program with an online quiz designed to help students identify their favourite reading genre and to select a book from this category. Senior students are encouraged to speak with a library staff member if they would like to participate in the challenge.

The library team are excited to announce that, on Friday May 30th, the library will host popular writer for young adults, George Ivanoff. George is a Melbourne based author who has written more than 100 books for kids and teens, including Monster Island, the interactive You Choose series, the RFDS Adventures, the OTHER WORLDS series, the Gamers trilogy and the non-fiction Survival Guides. George will present to all Year 7 students, using his comic skills to deliver engaging talks with a zany edge.

George will conclude the day with a writing workshop for 30 lucky students who enjoy creative writing. If your student is in Year 7 and loves using their imagination to create stories, then please encourage them to visit the library and register their interest in this workshop.

Parents and students are reminded that they can access Wheelers eBooks and audiobooks via the Infiniti library management system https://tlsc.concordinfiniti.com/login  or through the star icon on Compass. To login students use their Compass username and the ‘ch@ngeme’ password.

Harmony Week was held from 15 to 21 March and included Harmony Day, which coincided with the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. The library team love decorating our library and Harmony week involved a display of 200 flags from around the world. We also ran a popular Kahoot on books set in a variety of countries, craft activities and quizzes. Congratulations to Brendan of Year 12 who lead a well-attended walking tour where he shared his extensive knowledge of the world’s flags. Brendan shared facts and pieces of information ranging from the reasons why certain elements are included on a flag, and the differences between flags that seem almost identical. He also provided opportunity for interaction and communication between our year levels. The library team were happy to see the pride everyone had for their backgrounds and nationalities and the joy they experienced in searching for the location of their flag throughout the library’s 200 flags on display. On behalf of the TLSC Library, we extend a heartfelt thanks to Brendan for agreeing to share his knowledge and giving a fantastic tour to our students!

We concluded the end of Term 1 with an intense Kahoot battle to determine the true flag connoisseur of the school. Audience members cheered for their friends as staff and students fought hard to win the coveted title.

With the cooler months ahead of us, students are reminded that the library is open before school, recess, lunchtime and after school until 4:30 Monday to Friday.

We hope you enjoy the photos from our Harmony Week activities.
