Languages @ TLSC

Overseas Study Tours

Unfortunately we do not have enough students to participate in the Italy Study Tour for this year BUT we are looking at starting to make some plans for 2026. We are going to start preparing during Term 3 for this. We are also looking at organising a trip to Japan for our Japanese students and there will be more information about this coming up.

These in-country experiences are a fantastic way for our students to be immersed in both the Language and the Culture of these countries. They are also invaluable in providing students with opportunities for growth both personally and as language learners.

A big thank you to the families who have supported our Language programs so far!

Gita per gli studenti delle classi d'italiano superiori di TLSC

On April 29th the Year 10 and Year 11 Italian students went on an excursion to Lygon Street Carlton, Coasit and the Museo Italiano, Pellegrini’s Café and Il Mercato Centrale to explore the significance and impact that Italian migrants have had on Australia, but in particular Carlton!

When the Italians migrated, mainly during the 1950’s, many of them settled in Carlton and that’s how Carlton got known as “Little Italy”. Whilst in Lygon Street we explored through the many buildings and cafes and unpacked the history of these migrants who spent a lot of time here as they socialised, they introduced the first Italian delicatessens, butchers and of course cafes like University Café and Brunetti’s.

We discovered that some of the businesses and places the Italian migrants used to frequent no longer exist in Lygon Street like the Lygon Street Food Store, Borsari Bicycle store and Toto’s Pizza.

Our visit to Il Museo Italiano at Coasit enabled us to view first hand the many objects that some of the migrants brought with them on their journey to Australia for the purpose of “cercare una vita migliore” – “searching for a better life” after World War 2.  This opportunity allowed us to be fully immersed into history and to gain a new understanding of what they went through when they came here. This linked directly to our coursework where we learnt that a lot of these migrants used “il baule-the trunk” to send some of their belongings in for their adventure of their new life in Australia.

After visiting Il museo Italiano, we went to Pellegrini’s Espresso Bar in Bourke Street to visit this famous iconic café that was another meeting place for the Italian migrants that still operates today as an authentic and traditional Italian meeting place. It was established in 1954. We walked through and noted that some of the décor was very 70s and 80s style with lots of memorabilia. Tragically the owner, Sisto Malaspina, was stabbed in Bourke St and his wife and son have taken over running the café.

Our last stop was to Il Mercato centrale, again in Bourke Street, which essentially is mainly composed of three levels of authentic Italian foods and beverages. Here we had some time to explore and have our lunch.  We had many options to choose from and here we were also able to be immersed in Italian culture but also with the many people who spoke Italian.

Overall this excursion was a fun day that we all got to learn a little bit more about the migrant Italians, the Italian culture and about the contributions these great pioneers have made to Australia.
