 5/6 News

The Yr. 5/6 students have continued their fantastic work ethic and displaying kindness to others. As the year rapidly closes we still have lots of activities for the students to keep them actively engaged in school - a challenge for some as they are getting ready for secondary school.  Yr. 5 continue with their leadership program, while Yr.6 focus on their graduation and transition to secondary school.

Although we only have 4 weeks remaining in the school year, we can not fault their manner as they adapt and work with different teachers in the senior level in preparation for secondary school. In addition, the students will continue to receive  homework each fortnight posted on to the Google Classroom. Please encourage them to look at what is needed early in the fortnight, so that they are not overwhelmed on the weekend.

Mathematics

On Monday, we have a devoted lesson to problem solving, focusing on a range of strategies. The students have all shown significant improvement in their timetables and it has been great to see them all moving up stages during our Rocket maths sessions.

This week, we also focused on BODMAS. The students have been enjoying working in groups and doing Kahoots to improve their knowledge in this area.

Literacy

Students have continued to read our fantastic class novel 'Holes.' It's about a youth detention camp and the relationships the inmates make while digging 'holes' for the wardens. It has been great to see the students reading develop from our novel in the first semester to now. They are reading with great expression and really bringing the characters to life.

As a part of the novel study the students are then assigned various roles, such as:

Discussion Director - There are several duties associated with this role. First, the Discussion Director is responsible for guiding the literature circle through the discussion of the selected chapter(s). Another duty is to read the selection and determine in advance which questions should be posed in order to create the excitement and thought provoking discussion within the group. The Discussion Director is also responsible for ensuring that all members participate in the discussion and that the participants keep on task, redirecting the discussion as necessary.

Leadership

The Yr. 5's have done an incredible job finalising their video applications for the 2023 captaincy positions. The students have researched the qualities that make a good leader, read and interpreted job descriptions for next year's roles and decided which positions they would like to be considered for. They have demonstrated their organisation and time management skills to write scripts, practise and film videos before this weeks due date. They should be justifiably proud of their efforts.

Year 6 Transition & Graduation

Our Yr. 6 students have been doing transition into secondary lessons with Mr Brown and Miss Healey. We have had a some fantastic conversations with the students using a questions box. This gave the students the opportunity to ask questions and discuss any worries they may have, or what they are looking forward to.

In addition, they have been working on their graduation finalizing their year books. I would like to thank Alex Mathews and Viv Luckie for the brilliant job they did collecting all the student pages for the year book.

Gaelic Football Practice

The students have been spending the last few weeks training for our  Gaelic Football Day on Friday the the 18th of November. This has been great fun and we look forward to a fun day doing our Irish 'ting.'
