A short week but such a fun-filled week! In Literacy students began exploring diary writing, which is a new style of writing for them. As we had our public holiday on Tuesday, students wrote a diary entry about the events that occurred throughout their day off. Students focused on including details from their morning, afternoon and night, whether it be what activities they did, something they ate, people they saw or how they felt. Additionally, during Reading sessions students were engaged in a story that followed the week of a cat named Cookie. We continued to focus on retelling events of a story through acting out the story and building important parts with materials. From this story students transformed themselves into little cats named Cookie and wrote a diary entry from the perspective of the cat, based on the events from the story.
In Maths we continued to focus on location and positional language. This week students put their knowledge to the test by creating their very own obstacle courses for each other to move through. In mixed groups across the cohort students practised giving and receiving location key words to give directions. We continued to use this language to direct our partners to code our Botley robots around their own obstacle courses. This can be a fun activity for students to continue at home.
A highlight from the last few weeks has been students working hard to create speeches that include information all about themselves. All of the hard work came together when students used bravery to present their speeches in front of their peers. During their presentations students worked towards their speaking and listening goals such as using a clear voice for everyone to hear. Using body language that was still and standing straight as well as using eye contact with the audience. Every student did such a wonderful job and should be very proud of themselves. There was however, one student from each class who was selected to represent their Foundation class at the Junior Public Speaking competition. Well done to Isaac in FG, Sanvitha in FH and Meg in FJ who represented their classes. How fantastic it was to see you all deliver your speeches so confidently! A big congratulations and best wishes to Sanvi who will be representing Foundation in the Public Speaking Competition on Tuesday morning.
Foundation were incredibly excited to find out that we were able to listen in to the end of a special guest that was visiting the Year 3/4’s. Shae Graham is an Australian wheelchair rugby player. She competed at the 2020 Summer Paralympics, her first Games and the first female to be selected for the Steelers. Shae gave a presentation to the 3/4’s and Foundation were lucky enough to join in for the Q&A time. Olivia wanted to know what Shae’s favourite colour was. Meg and Kiara asked if Shae always moves around in a wheelchair. Melody asked how old Shae is and what her favourite food is. Sunny asked if she had pink in her hair. Sanvi asked what materials her wheelchair is made out of. During Wellbeing students spoke about some of our classes top character strengths, one of their top strengths was Kindness. From these discussions students thought of the lovely idea to create a Kindness cards for Shae Graham.
We hope you all have a wonderful week and stay cool.
Your Foundation teaching team,
Brooke Henwood, Jessica Hirvonen and Ella Gasowski.
