Independence Centre

Curriculum
What a great week we have had! This week we have had not one but two exciting events in the Independence Centre, our Public Speaking Competition and a visit from Paralympian Shae Graham. We cheered on our fellow 3/4s in their public speaking competition with representatives from each class sharing their speeches on what they would do if they ruled the world. Shae Graham came into MPRPS with a smile on her face sharing her exciting world of being the first female athlete to represent Australia in wheelchair rugby.
In Writing this week, we have started to research a range of Australian Flora to start developing our own websites to inform what plants may be well suited to our gardens at school and why we should get them.
In Reading, we have started to look at the difference between opinions and facts when comparing texts. We were also able to explore the world of digital websites, learning about why we use features like hyperlinks, titles and images to make a website engaging.
Maths sessions were focused on starting our shapes unit. Students had the opportunity to display their skills in completing tangram problems and working out the area and perimeter of these irregular shapes. It was amazing to see the students developing their understanding of how we can work out the area of regular shapes AND a range of weird and wacky combinations.
In Science this week, we explored different sources of heat and how the heat of water can alter how something dissolves. We conducted an experiment with hot, warm and cold water, comparing what happens when 2-3 drops of food colouring is added. We noticed that each different cup of water reacted differently to the food colouring but we don't want to give too much away just in case you would like to have a go at home!
Have a wonderful week,
Miss Chooi, Miss Richardson, Miss Wang, Mrs McCoy, Miss Tillotson and Miss Honan
