Curriculum
Halo semuanya (Hello everyone!)
What a busy, yet wonderful week we’ve had in the Leadership Centre! We can’t believe it is already halfway through the term. We have some amazing things coming up in the second half of this term, but first let’s recap the week that has been.
5/6 Sport was certainly a highlight for the Leadership Centre. We would like to express our gratitude to Mrs Butterworth who arranged for Paralympian Shae Graham to speak to the Senior School about her path to becoming a professional athlete. Despite being active before her accident, Shae ignored Para-sport for almost a decade before making a bet with her brother (which she lost) and trying Wheelchair Rugby. Five years later, at the 2019 Four Nations in Alabama, USA, she made her international debut for the Australian Wheelchair Rugby team. From the get go, Shae impressed the coaching staff and fellow players with her skills and talent. Shae was selected to compete at her first Paralympic Games in Tokyo 2020. Selection to the 2020 Australian Paralympic Team was a dream come true for Shae, who set herself a personal goal when she first started playing to reach the Paralympics. We would like to say a big thank you to Shae for sharing her inspirational story which was a great reminder that perseverance and hard work really does pay off.
In Literacy, students presented their ‘How I see my future’ speeches in classes. Teachers were very impressed with the high level benchmark students set. It has been a focus for students to implement a range of public speaking skills to further enhance their presentations and it was great to see that the assessment rubric was used by students to set personal goals to strive towards. Congratulations to Vanessa (5/6B), Conrad (5/6C), Chris (5/6EB), Grace (5/6D) and Yianni (5/6W) who were chosen to represent their classes at Friday's Public Speaking Competition.
In Guided Inquiry, students continue to create a product that they will have the opportunity to build a 3D prototype. In addition, students will begin creating a business plan to assist them in prioritising actions such as identifying the direction in which the business is going, defining purpose and objectives and mapping out the process to help manage their proposed business. We are looking forward to this next step in our unit.
In Maths, students explored what opportunity cost is and this really complemented the work that students are doing in our current Guided Inquiry unit! Opportunity cost is the value of the next-best alternative when a decision is made; it’s what is given up. For example, you have a million dollars and choose to invest it in a product line that will generate a return of 5%. If you could have spent the money on a different investment that would have generated a return of 7%, then the 2% difference between the two alternatives is the foregone opportunity cost of this decision. This was explored through helpful videos and hands-on activities to help students conceptualise the meaning of opportunity cost.
Have a wonderful week!
