Principal's Message

Teresa Stone

Over the past couple of years, all Victorians have experienced events that have impacted our ability to have a strong working memory and maintain our self-regulation and empathy for others.  It is a vital component that supports learning for our students.  Sometimes however it is not given equal weight with our literacy and numeracy learning.

As a school community, we have all been striving to rebuild good learning habits, of social and emotional regulation, getting organised to learn, empathy and resilience.  These are vital skills and mindsets for successful brain health and academic learning.

Over the past couple of weeks we have been immersing our students and teachers in activities that build successful skills in emotional and social regulation, organisational skills and effective learning relationships and connections.  I hope your kids have been able to tell you about the amazing work they have been doing.

From parent and student opinion surveys we also know that there is a strong perception of bullying at the moment.  Bullying happens for many reasons, and can be due to low social and emotional skills to connect with others in a healthy way.  This can occur for the child trying to get what they want and the child that is on the receiving end.  It is an area of learning for all involved and like anything can take time and persistence to grow.

The year 4’s and 5’s have been attending a bully zero program as part of their transition into senior school next year and all of our students will participate in this work to reduce bullying.  Conflict is part of life and we also need to know how to deal with conflict however we as a community do not tolerate bullying.

On our next issue, we will put resources on our community page for you to

  • help build social and emotional skills
  • support students to build their working memory through visuals
  • and Bully Zero links
